Sync is Dead (almost). Long Live Downloads! (Android)

3 gb is metadata but that is new. The other errors have been happening even when there was 12GB free. The answer also makes no sense. You’ve used up all your space so we’re going to show a screen that says there is zero content here even though you’ve consumed 20GB of disk space.

There does appear to be a bug where it isn’t recognizing your space is full and it’s still trying to download. I will look into this, but give it more space and see if that fixes your issue.

@anon18523487 is there a separate thread for the Downloads feature on iOS or should we post questions here? [edit - found it]

I’m running into an issue (on iOS) where the downloads seem to be taking way more space than they are reporting. Within the app it says ~4GB of downloads, but within my system, it is showing the Plex App taking 16GB and filling up all of my storage. Is this a known issue?

Could detailed status information be added similar to what was shown with Sync? Currently, the only status Downloads provides is a small circle icon and it’s difficult to see the actual progress.

As stated before downloads now only plays from playlists tab and not the library so I can’t shuffle all the music I downloaded. And the playlist shows no songs but still shuffles (See photo). It shows 249 items but no tracks or artists. And I checked and am only using 16 of the 20GB alotted.

Is that a regular playlist or a Smart Playlist? If it’s a smart one can you show me the rule you used to generate that? If it’s a regular one, that looks like maybe a bug. On Plex Web, is the count and time the same there?

It’s a smart list but this happens on normal playlists too. The counts are accurate. The filter for this one is any track with 4 stars or 5 stars (greater than 3).

Currently shows 251 as I have added ratings to two more songs since posting.

And as stated from the library of downloads it can’t play anytrack but shows all of them and in playlists it often shows no tracks but plays the playlist.

Hmm. I don’t have many things rated so reproducing that filter I only get 8 results, but all 8 do play for me.

Can you get me a new android log after trying to playback this playlist?

It plays the list, it just doesn’t display it, but the main library displays and doesn’t play. I will try and generate the log for the download library. Having to play a single playlist is getting to be a hassle and crashes regularly. It also won’t play a single song added to the queue not from the currently playing playlist. It does play the song fine if I play it from the playlist it is part of.

Here is log file from today. I started the app on my phone at 1:22 and it wasn’t until 1:32 that I got music to play. I deleted a playlist to avoid issues over space available. I had to go back and forth on tabs a few times to get the library to load (gave me no downloaded files error). At 1:30 I tried to play the main download library and it failed. Then I loaded the smart playlist and it showed no files and I had to click shuffle twice before it played anything.

So I wondered about something that I read in the FAQ:

Does the played status for downloaded content update with the server?

Yes. The client will store and track playback progress per user. Your watched status will not be impacted by other users on the same device. The watched status will be updated with the server when the app next syncs information.

I noticed that some podcasts that I had downloaded, listened to, and manually marked as played in the Download section did not sync status to the server. See screenshots below:

This screenshot is from the Downloads menu, showing 2 of the 3 played.

This screenshot is from the Podcast Library (not in Downloads) menu, showing 3 unplayed despite 2 being played.

I guess my question is how often does the syncing happen, as I’ve waited several days and done a few refreshes of the downloads. I don’t want to have to double-play mark manually, so I dunno if I’m using the feature the right way.

Secondly, if I were to play them outside of the download area, would that be the same as playing them offline or are they streamed? I’m afraid to get zinged with my data caps, so it’s kind of important.

Can you confirm that the Download “Next 5 unplayed episodes” in Podcasts is functioning correctly? I get 5 random episodes from multiple different years, so I’m a bit confused here. @anon18523487

Hey @anon18523487 here’s some info that might help troubleshoot. I noticed timeout errors in the log so I reformatted my sd card to be internal storage and completely removed and reinstalled Plex. I then changed plex to the sd card. Downloads, smartlists, and play library seem to be working. The timeout issues for now seem resolved.
The only issue now is I can’t find where the files are being stored. File manager shows the com.plex…/files folder is empty but I currently have 12GB downloaded. I post again if the errors return.

Huh? If you formatted the card to internal storage, your device should not see the sd card as external storage to give you that option. You sure you used internal storage?

Assuming you did use internal storage above, you can’t view the data folder normally. This is private app space and can’t be viewed by other programs, unless you root your device. If your card is still external storage than you should be able to see these files when browsing your sd card.

So what is supposed to happen when you use the “Download” feature here instead of sync? I swapped to “Download” because sync took much longer and made files 2-4 times bigger than the original. I’ve got an Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet, and it ought to be able to handle most of my movie codecs. But since I have so many sources for my files, the codecs are kind of all over the place. So I won’t know for sure if my device can handle a DrectPlay of a file until it is downloaded and I try it.

In particular, one show is HEVC, but it seems that my device is just incapable of viewing the episodes, and must have it transcoded in the first place. Shouldn’t the player be able to report its inability to play a file based on the file info, and request a transcoded version instead?

I have been going through multiple different postings to try and understand this option a little bit more. Like several others in this topic, I travel a ton for work and would love to see the ability to do all unwatched episodes. That is already on the list. The question I have and cannot find is the automatic delete option. I had the sync setup to automatically delete episodes after they were watched. There isn’t clarity on the the delete options. Does it mean that once the episode is played, it will delete based on the options or does it automatically delete after the selected time period regardless of being played or not? This isn’t very clear in the UI.

The other thing I am running across with the Android version is that on an inconsistent basis, if I go into a tv season and choose the download option, cancel and then try to go to the library list of tv episodes, I cannot actually tap on anything. I have to change libraries and then go back to the tv library (likely the same with movies) and can scroll and tap on items to select.

Yes, episodes will be delete from Downloads based on the criteria you placed. This only removes the episode from Downloads, it will not remove the actual file from your server. Your server has a separate setting if you want to remove “watched” content from your server.

Can you provide the exact steps you are doing? I’m unable to reproduce this. Also provide the exact version of the app you are using.

Removing the ability to download my upnext/continue watching queue makes this feature completely useless, I would like to test it, but it’s now useless.

all most people want is to be able to cache the shows they are watching so they don’t have to worry about using data or flakey connections.

I am no longer having the issue. Thanks.
