Sync is Dead (almost). Long Live Downloads! (Part 2 - iOS)

Is it possible to prevent the deletion of synced content at the end of the year? My Plex Server will be offline for the next 9 months and I would like to keep access to the content I have already synced until then.

I can’t get the new feature to work in IOS 15. As far as I can tell the download works, and there are no errors on the server end. However the IOS client errors at the ‘media assimilation’ part.

Here are the line from the log file;

I’ve also DM’d the full log.

That looks like a bug we recently identified. I’ll post here when a fix is available.

Perfect, thanks for the update.

I’ve just stopped reading all the reply’s to how this is a broken feature. Now it’s being forced upon us Jan 1 2022
fantastic! I just opened plex on my iPad to sync another movie and the new downloads was re-enabled. Wtf?! Plex people, stop this nonsense. Focus on what the users actually want instead of releasing this junk that has half the features of the old system. New stuff is great, but develop it til it works and incorporates all the features of the current feature, then release it! And don’t change my settings without my knowledge. That’s just
I want to reach through my screen and slap a developer.

Hello,

iOS 15 user here.

When I try to play “Downloads” from the main home screen, I have an error message specifying “Paused for too long” (don’t have the exact error message as my iPhone).

However, when I play the same media from the Downloads page, it plays OK.

Any suggestion ?

I’ve already try to delete / download again files and uninstall / reinstall Plex ios app, but it does’nt solve a thing.

Seems similar to my issue, by the way. No update on that since august ?

Can you reproduce and get me the iOS log. I am not able to reproduce this on my end.

Yeah I hadn’t really noticed the timeline on implementation. But 1-1-2022 should be fine.My one single 700mb file on a gigabit connection may just about have downloaded by then.

It really is truly laughable that Plex being renowned for never giving timelines for features being added always offer deadlines for when something that is clearly not even close to being usable becomes the new default.

The same 700mb original quality file that is so far at 2 hours downloading and seemingly nowhere near to completion took 14 seconds in Infuse to download and playback. In Jellyfin 24 seconds
or 94 seconds in Emby forcing a transcode of file size down even further.

If I download a season, it never completes. There is no option to delete. I can watch the entire season (they are all actually complete), but Plex Android app never thinks they are done. It took me some time, but I can delete it by canceling the download. But for a while there, I had about 40 GB of my storage just sitting there with no way to delete it unless I deleted all content, and then re-download all the seasons I didn’t want to delete. I can pull logs if you need them, but its really weird.

Did you ever provide a log for me to look into this?

That’s unusual. The app will check if new episodes have been added, but it should say it’s complete if there is nothing new.

There is no option to delete.

You cannot remove individual items. Downloads, just like Sync, works as entire groups. It’s all or nothing. You can Download a season and tell it to remove items after they are watched and they should get removed automatically, there is no way to do it manually.

It doesn’t allow for the entire season to be deleted. So, I have three different seasons of three different shows. But there is no option to delete the downloaded season, even when they are all watched?

You can remove Downloaded items from the “Items” tab under the Downloads page.

  • swipe the item to the left; or
  • long press on the item then select “Delete Download”

Is there going to be a more informative status message added?

Currently it just says “Downloading
” but something like “Downloading
45% (1/3)” would be much more useful.

Also, there’s no action that a user can take when a download fails or an explanation of why it failed (a download that works on the previous sync).

Also, remembering the user’s last selected download preference each time they download a new item would be better than using the defaults.

Could someone verify the following bug with the new downloads function?

  • The Server is a Synology DS920+, SW Version 1.24.5.5160-7000
  • The Client is an Ipad Air 2, SW Version 7.24.1
  • In the Client “downloads” are activated for up to 32 GB. Some content is marked for download.
  • Ipad memory shows Plex App using 33.13 GB of documents & data
  • When I start the Client, a view seconds later a message appears (translated): memory limit reached. more content cannot be downloaded.
  • Server is killed/crashed (according to “Plex Crash Uploader.log”)

cheers

Super disappointed in the plea team on yet another incomplete feature. Sync decently for me, but download does nothing at all from my android/fire tablet client. I select to download an episode and literally nothing happens. No errors. No message. Nothing. My old synced episodes are now completely unusable too despite appearing in my “synced” tab. I’m a plex lifetime user, and really disappointed that they have completely broken the most important feature to me while also providing no actual user support, as evidenced by the plethora of unanswered problems in this very thread. What a bummer.

Tried out the Downloads feature and couldn’t get any media to download at all. Just sat there spinning. Switched back to the Sync feature (which I’ve never had any issues with). I’m on iOS 15 on an iPad, my Media Server is sat on a M1 Mac Mini with macOS 12.0.1. The only thing I saw in the logs was a message indicating the episode was going to transcode but nothing else appeared after that.

Will wait and see what comes of any app updates and will isolate testing on my iPhone as updates become available.

My only ask would be not to switch off the Sync functionality until Downloads are as reliable. Thanks for the efforts in the meantime.

Sure,

How shall we proceed ?

I already have the logs.

By PM ?

Sure, you can PM the logs to me.
