Syncing between two servers (in different locations)

Relatively new to Plex, been using Kodi previously…
Using Kodi on my RPI4 at home, it pulls the movie files off a NAS. I also have the same setup at my sister’s place (a separate NAS and a RPi 4 running LibreElec). Currently I VPN into my sister’s NAS, copy over any new movies I’ve ripped since the last sync, then ssh into her Kodi box and do a manual update.
Question: switching over to Plex server (running on each respective NAS), is there an easy way to sync libraries between locations? Maybe even in a way that allows us to use separate accounts since we watch different shows etc. - would something like Overseerr do the trick?
Thanks for any ideas!

As far as I understood your description, what you need is just a method of copying the media files. And that is outside of Plex’s scope anyway. So use whatever method works for you.

You can tell Plex server to scan its media folders periodically or during its nightly maintenance period.
That way the items will appear auto-magically. If you stick to the organizational and file naming requirements of Plex, this will work without the need of human intervention.
What you should avoid is to copy media files during the library scans. This can lead to Plex mis-recognizing partially-copied files.

If you then enable the playback status syncing on both of your Plex user accounts, you can use whatever Plex server is convenient or accessible. The information which episode of your current TV show is up next will be ready.

I understand you want to sync the MEDIA between two remote machines. You could network both machines with Tailscale (free) and run rsync periodically (via Crontab if at least one machine is running some kind of Linux/Unix).

Thank you, @OttoKerner and @Havohej for your replies! I think I have a good idea where to proceed from here.

FYI , look into Resillio Sync to automatically sync all the files or select files or folders to your 2nd server.

Cheap(for non business) safe, secure, resilient and easy.

Originally developed by BitTorrent.

It’s great that you keep an offsite backup of your files

But as a separate issue, have you considered just enabling remote access for your sister so she can use your server?

Imagine you create a collection, change poster artwork, have a mismatched files. You have to do everything twice, which may not seem like a big deal until is

I have a 2nd server as a backup but it’s essentially gone unmaintained because it’s a headache

Remote access is one of the huge benefits of using something like Plex instead of Kodi

Thanks for the suggestion! She’d still be able to use a separate account, right? I guess that would work. Only issue might be slow internet speeds… I’m getting about 10 MB/s doing file transfers from one server to the other (using a VPN).

Yeah, that could be an issue depending on what kind of files you have. 4k is out of the question but you could get away with most 720p and a lot of 1080p.

It’s actually much more difficult to use a VPN if you want remote access. If your speeds are higher without it’s best to just bypass the VPN for Plex altogether

That depends if the OP actually gets 10 MB/s (80 Mbps) or 10 Mbps (byte vs. bit)… with 10 MB/s you should get away with even high-quality / high-bitrate Blu-Ray rips (and some lower-bitrate 4K streams).

With 10Mbps that’s indeed a different story

Oh yeah, I’m so used to seeing mbps I didn’t even catch that. 80mbps would work for most of my 4k library
