Synology DiskStation DS218play

Hi all,

I am looking to purchase a DiskStation DS218play to run Plex fully. It looks like it is not supported but I feel like it is. Can someone confirm that it is supported? I would love to purchase this today so I can get the fun off my Desktop and to the NAS. Thanks in advance!

The DS218play uses an ARM v8 chip which is not yet officially supported.
The team is currently running a public forum beta:

If you consider using those, keep in mind this is an unreleased test version. There’s a number of known bugs/issues – reading the thread will help you understand the constraints.

Awesome, I will get one on order and join the public forum beta.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I’m waiting on black Friday/ cyber Monday sales to see if I can snap up a Synology DS218+ NAS. … well I thought I was.
If this NAS is not compatible. what would you suggest in the same budget?

So what I ended up doing was purchasing a QNAP 251+. I found a really good deal on a slightly used one on eBay with 4TB(x2 2TB) and 8GB RAM $345 shipped.

All I need to do is upgrade the drives to x2 4TB and I should be golden. And it was compatible with Plex already. Haven’t had a problem yet!

DS218+ is supported, 218:PLAY isn’t (from memory).

218play is supported.

To be clear.

Both are supported.

Intel based have always been available.
Mid summer we began supporting the ARMv8. The ARMv8 version (RealTek CPU) is in final public beta and working very well. It is a very stable processor.

cheers guys. the 218play threw me.
so a DS218+ for me then. looks ideal for my first set up using PLEX around the home.

Would someone please let NAS Compares know (I’ve tried to reach out but he’s as busy as I am)

Plex Pass is no longer required.

Two weeks after the initial PlexPass Alpha, I opened up to Public alpha.

Since then, it has undergone several updates.

“Alpha” testing was a huge success.

We’re now at the point where both the RealTek and Annapurna processors are working properly.
(Annapurna was the troubled child haha)

The thread to look for is the Forum Preview thread “Hopefully Smaller, Faster”…
In there you’ll find all the new Plex builds.

These are the last step before becoming official “Plex Pass” releases and on to general Public.

It’s been a heck of road but we’re almost there.
