Hey,
just received my ds218play and I am wondering if there is a way to get Plex running on it?
My DSM Version is 6.1.1-15152 Update 8.
Any help would be great.
Thx in advance.

There isnāt any support yet for the Realtek 1296 CPU (ARM v8 variant).
I am working with Engineering on it for the other DSx18 models which use it.
Following this thread. Our QNAP is too old and weak so stuck at 0.9.4 I think it is, so Iām doing some research which pointed me to the ds218play or probably sufficient for us the ds118. They say it can handle 4K transcoding with their software, but I canāt find anything else suggesting Plex will transcode on any ARM processors (and if Iām not going to get transcoding, it probably isnāt worth buying a new NAS).
ARM processors arenāt strong enough to support video transcoding. Synology provides transcoding through their proprietary video chip (which we donāt have access to.
For video transcoding on Synology, you will want one with the newer Intel processors.
If i switch to a ds218+ i will be fine running plex?
Here is the CPU list by model https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledgebase/DSM/tutorial/General/What_kind_of_CPU_does_my_NAS_have
DS218+ Intel Celeron J3355 Dual Core 2 Yes Apollolake DDR3L SO-DIMM 2GB
Yes, Itās supported and supports hardware transcoding for Plex Plass users
ok thx for your immediate reply. I will be getting the ds218+ tomorrow.
I really appreciate your quick responses. Your doing a great job!

Any ETA on support for DS218play and similar models? I just got one and assumed all synology NASā had Plex support.
Itās safe to assume support will come and it wonāt just be dropped entirely?
Iām in the same boat as kianrafiee, I just purchased a DS218play under the assumption it already had plex support. Is this something that you think will definitely happen, or should I try and exchange it while I can, for a different model?
Regarding purchasing the NAS
If you look at the NAS compatibility guide, you will find what is currently supported.
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201373803-NAS-Compatibility-List
Also compare with this list from Synology
https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledgebase/DSM/tutorial/General/What_kind_of_CPU_does_my_NAS_have
You will see the DS218+ is an Intel ApolloLake CPU and is supported because itās an Intel CPU
The DS218play is a RealTek RTD1296. It is an ARMv8 which does not have ARMv7 compatibility mode. If it did, you would be able to use PMS on it in compatibility mode at this time
So just to verify, Plex Server does run on the new model DS218+ with the intel chip?
If there are any difficulties loading for it, please let me know.
It specifically has
CPU Model Intel Celeron J3355
This is known as the āApolloLakeā class CPU/GPU
Hi
Iāve just tried the third packages that can be downloaded:
None of then are working on my synology DS218play.
This model is a realtek RTD1296 Soc processor with DSM 6.1.4 15217 OS.
I hope that you will provide a new version for Plex for this NAS seriesā¦
Thanks
Syno DS218play uses the Realtek 1296 CPU and is not supported at this time. There are several discussions on this very point.

Iāve looked and Plex NAS Compatibility list and DS218+ isnāt listed.
@ChuckPA could You update that list?
i dont see it on the list for supported devices āDS218+ā
I added support for it.
The documentation lags behind
Apollolake processors are supported by Synologyās āX86_64ā architecture designation.
This having been said, only X86_64 binaries should be installed. They consequently do provide hardware transcoding and give best overall performance.
hello i just received my nas ds218play.
but if I understand correctly plex is not compatible with this model.
will there be an update for this model?
YES, THERE IS A WAY!!!
After severals searchs Iāve find a page: Synology DS218play PLEX Installation Guide ā Step by Step ā NAS Compares
After the installation i did two modifications, It is necessary to give all the permissions to the āPlexā user in the multimedia folder (with File Station) where we have the video files. Then I have redirectioned in my router to the port 32400 tcp/udp the ip of my Synology , this port is the official port of plex in the intranet/internet.
These two modifications are very importants if you want that plex see the folder multimedia.
I access to plex with a Lg Tv, two google chrome casts, my iPhone 6 and 7 and one iPad air and all is ok at the moment.
I wait to have helped yourself.
