Synology Docker Transcode can't write to server's disk

DS418play - RealTek ARMv8 (64 bit)

https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledgebase/DSM/tutorial/Compatibility_Peripherals/What_kind_of_CPU_does_my_NAS_have

it doesn’t have hardware support in Plex.

It can software transcode up to about 20 Mbps of H.264 one stream.

Synology makes a great NAS but a lousy compute platform.

EDIT: On an Intel (what I’ve tested with)… The GT-1050 can really haul. I imagine the 1650 will do a lot more?

Hmm, that’s odd. When I signed up for the Plex Pass, it said that it was using the hardware. And, I did see a marked improvement. I couldn’t come close to 20 Mbps prior to that.

Okay. That settles it. I’ll move Plex off the Synology completely. Now for the hard part of coming up with a clever name for the new machine.

Is there much practical difference between running Plex on Windows vs Linux?

Also, will my sharing with other users be under the same name? IOW, will I need to send a new invitations? Or, is this where I need to take over an existing server? Obviously, this is a part of your architecture I haven’t dug into, deeply.

There’s a trick in everything.

Read very carefully and observe my fingers never, at any point, leave my hands :smiling_imp:

The “Preferences.xml” is the server’s identity.

Should you do the following:

  1. Install PMS on a new machine.
  2. Get it all configured with some oddball Friendly name that won’t conflict
    a. this includes having all the same library names configured – unless you share the whole machine with folks.
  3. Add a Friendly name (even if it is the hostname) to the Plex settings .
  4. Stop Plex.
  5. COPY that Preferences.xml and overwrite the one on the new machine.
  6. When you start Plex, the new machine will assume the identity it had.

Depending on when you make the transfer, (how much media is indexed) , users will see a difference but the host will be there and shared.

There is a process of taking from Linux → Linux if you would rather take the whole machine … Your choice - you’ll have to edit the folder definitions after the migration but it’s easy to do.

Here’s the How-To (backup on one – restore on the other )

I have a lot of tips/tricks. you might want to give that tag a read

And, of course, the big irony is, if/when I do move to a machine with hardware support, I probably won’t need to optimize my movies, anymore. The genesis of this entire thread

I’ll start digging though your tips collection.

I appreciate all the time you’ve given me.

That GTX will take you a long way. Leverage it to the max.
