Synology DS220+ cant transcode specific files fast enough causing CPU to load 100% and stream stutter

As title says, I have some specific files (from the same source, more on that later) that can be watched for 20-30 sec before causing the transcode speed to dip below 1.0 according to the logs. The CPU surges to 100% load to catch up and the stream just buffers to eternity. The odd thing is that its not particularly big nor dense files. I have tried both direct playing and transcoding and on mulitple devices. I have also tried with and without subtitles.

I’ve tried to do some kind of rudimentary testing to see if the issues lies with the NAS and the CPU. I’ve tried to play my highest bitrate file (almost 1,5 times the bitrate compared to the struggling files) on my phone and computer simultaneously, with all kinds of different combination of transcoding/subtitles/direct stream. While testing the CPU rarely breached 50% load mark.

I am really at a loss what the error here is. As I mentioned at the start of my post, all the files are from the same source. Is is possible that something is wrong with the files themselves that causes the issue?

That’s kinda exotic. Where are these from? If it was also 10bit I’d be sure it was anime.

I wonder if Level 5 with 6 ref frames is too much for the little Syno.

You could try Optimizing these in Plex in advance.

And depending on your player, you could try increasing the maximum H.264 level to 5, if the player has that setting. That might allow Direct Play/Direct Streaming to succeed. But it also might not work - again, it’s a bit exotic. Most players don’t claim to support H.264 Levels above 4.1 or 4.2.

I tried optimizing them through the plex tool but it failed when doing so, and I havn’t investigated the matter more closely. I just assumed the error when optimizing was the same as the one causing them to buffer.

Are subtitles in use ?

The J4025 CPU can easily transcode the video in hardware however burning in subtitles is entirely a different matter with anything but a Xeon-based Synology NAS.

Their lack of CPU power will strain the CPU regardless of bitrate.
Couple that with converting 5.1 to AAC 2 channel (most players) will push them to the peg.

Would it be possible to see the debug log files which capture the start of the playback for this file? It will definitively tell us what PMS was seeing and what it decided to do. From there, understanding how the DS220+ behaved is an easy next step.

If I may comment on the video encoding?

  1. Bitrate 3776 kbps = 3.7 Mbps
  2. Level 5.0 is for 135,000 Kbps (aka 135 Mbps) and often used with HEVC.
  3. Level 4.0 is more appropriate (20 Mbps) and more universally acceptable for H.264.
  4. If subtitles are being burned, burning into Level 5.0 video profile is more involved than 4.0 . As such, I would expect the J4025 to be able to cope with most of this CPU load – possibly even all

I can try to gather some logs and share. I did try both with and without subtitles, and with image only format, with the same result. I must admit I am new to all this, but I did some poking around this (and other) forums in order to find a solution and subtitles were mentioned on multiple occasions as the thief in the drama.

Let’s go back to the original file you reported and were having trouble with.

  1. Settings - Server - General - Show Advanced
  2. DEBUG logging ON, VERBOSE logging OFF ( Verbose logging makes things difficult)
  3. SAVE

Now, let’s capture the logs

  1. Play the file for 30 seconds.
  2. Stop
  3. Wait 20 seconds
  4. Download the logs ZIP
  5. Hover over the item & expose the ellipsis
  6. Get Info → View XML
  7. Copy / paste the XML info a text file
  8. Attach the XML and ZIP file.

Unsure if I got the correct XML file. The format of it is quite nasty as well since I have no proper program installed to deal with such files. I really appreciate the help!

Thank you for these files. It’s telling me what I needed to see.

  1. You are getting hardware acceleration
  2. The transcoder can’t split the file into blocks for the hardware to process properly. (bad encoding)
  3. Recommendation: Replace the file / Handbrake the file and use standard Ref frame values of 1 - 4
