I have a Synology DS220+ with the latest update of Plex Media server. The transcoder was working perfectly fine before the update and now, every time I have it do media optimization for a movie or do the on demand transcoding for a client, my CPU spikes to between 50 to 75% instantaneously and the transcoder just hangs. Stays at -1%. Before, the server would transcode movies just fine it would take maybe anywhere between 1 hour and two depending on the movie and what it’s transcoding and it could transcode multiple streams at a time, all with the CPU staying below 5%. It appears to me that after this update the GPU is not being utilized at all and instead plex media server is trying to use the CPU to transcode, which is not ending very well. I’m currently working right now but I’d be happy to send server logs when I get home. I’m planning on rolling back the update until this can get fixed.
Can you please recreate and capture this for me (DEBUG logging enabled – which is the default) then download the server logs ZIP file?
From that ZIP file, I’ll be able to see the start of playback and why it’s doing what it’s doing.
Based on your description , and the DS220+ being a dual core CPU, I suspect subtitles are getting involved / interfering.

The title I’m trying to optimize is one of the Lord of the Rings movies, it just hangs at -1%. Other on the fly encoding seems to work okay, but it appears to be utilizing the CPU instead of the GPU for encoding.

Your logs show me Playback starting before PMS finished starting up. Better would be to give it a minute before starting playback of music or video.

You’re pushing it hard. That’s a lot of bitrate for a NAS dual core CPU.

Are you also trying to playback music concurrent with this?
The biggest problem I see here is the host getting slammed
Are you trying to Optimize the JellyFish 140 Mbps just as a test or do you want it for other purpose ??
The version you have also has TrueHD in it. I don’t have that in my files from the original site.

The JellyFish was a benchmark. I was intentionally pushing the transcoder. that would make sense about the Lord of the Rings file, which is my primary concern here. But it doesn’t answer why it’s utilizing the CPU, I thought it utilized just the GPU decoder/encoder (or am I wrong here?). Also, I have the optimizer set to “very slow”, could that have a part in it?
When you have subtitles in the file (specifically PGS, VOBSUB, or DVDRIP – image based), the transcoder forcibly engages
This happens because only physical BR disk players can overlay images in real-time playback.
At this point (which we’re working on changing), Subtitle ‘burning’ (overlaying) is done by the CPU.
If you turn off / disable subtitles and play – all should be fine and transcode easily.
When you enable subtitles, PMS must switch to Software Encoding . This is where the CPU load comes from.
Hardware is performed by the embedded QSV module but Software is just raw ‘crunch’ power. Synology NAS CPUs (and unfortunately especially any dual core) suffers badly.
