Synology DS425+ hardware transcoding issue

After reading this thread, I understand why the hardware transcoding information is No for every x25 series Synology other than the Beestation Plus. I’m looking to buy a new Synology and I’m not going to buy a Beestation Plus.

Synology’s site was recommending the DS925+, but as I look at the specs Synology says it has a AMD Ryzen V1500B processor, but the Plex NAS Compatibility spreadsheet says it has an ARMv8 (RTD1619B) 1.1 Ghz. That seems like a major difference. Assuming the manufacturer is correct and the DS925+ is actually an AMD processor, I’m guessing hardware transcoding will never be a thing even after this issue gets ironed out.

It also looks like all of the high end units in the x25 series are all Ryzen chips. I’m assuming I need to focus on the Intel chip units if I care about hardware transcoding and hope to some day get it working on a new Synology unit.

Thoughts?

There is indeed an error on the Plex compatibility list, for the DS925+ and the DS1525+. If you are really looking for a Synology brand NAS compatible with Plex hardware transcoding, the DS423+ (if you can still find it) seems the most suitable to me. If you are not necessarily focused on this brand, you can find better hardware from other brands (Asustor, QNAP etc.)

Thanks @Plichtao . I’m not a fan of what’s going on with Synology recently so I may consider switching to a different brand. My biggest concern is that I use the Synology Surveillance Station software that comes with it. I like the Surveillance Station software and I have purchased additional camera licenses that are transferrable to new Synology units.

I faced a similar problem: three Synology NASes, with Hyperbackup between them (which works very well), Surveillance Station (with additional camera licenses). That’s why I wanted to stay with Synology. But buying the DS425+ wasn’t the best choice for me…
Shortly before, I had the opportunity to test an Asustor AS6704T. Hardware-wise, it’s much better, and the operating system and interface are pretty good !

The V1500B has no GPU.

See the product brief: AMD Ryzen Embedded V1000 Series

what are you doing about Surveillance Station?

If you absolutely want to continue using Surveillance Station but you are no longer interested in Synology hardware, and you think the competition offers better, you can install Surveillance Station on a small Synology NAS (one bay is enough) like the DS118 or DS124, which is really cheap even new. Check the specifications on the official website regarding the number of cameras these models can manage. But I think we’re getting a bit off topic here…

Has there been any update or developments on the HDR tonemapping for the DS425+ ?

Seems like this is the last piece to get the 425+ up to par

No news. What a shame, so close to the finish line…

I have a feeling if we could load the Beestation i915 driver onto the 225/425 it may work, including tone mapping.

I did have a play with this but can’t seem to get past the 3 unknown symbol errors (pwm_get, pwm_put & pwm_apply_state). I’ve tried loading associated modules from the Beestation but still always get stuck at the same 3 errors when loading the i915.

The ‘fix’ driver we are using at the moment isn’t specifically made for the same kernel version of the x25+ units, I think that maybe half the problem… but to be honest I haven’t given it much time recently.

It’s good that you’re still interested in this problem. I don’t think there are many of us who own a DS225+ / DS425+ and want to use hardware transcoding on these NAS devices… I think this must be the most difficult part to solve. I reported the problem to Rusty on Synoforum.com at the beginning of October, but haven’t heard back since.

Hi guys, finally got my own Ds425+ as my previous DS918+ is dead.

Just to check if there is any new remedy for HW transcoding for x25 sets?

Doesn’t look like it, but maybe the Black Friday deals reignites interest.
