Synology DSM 7

I think you’re getting confused.

First – The installation & migration is now complete. Don’t touch “PlexMediaServer”. Forget it exists.

From now on, we’re only concerned about the shared folders which contain your media.

Here is how I grant access to my “Animated” (animated movies) shared folder so Plex can read it.

Hi, Chuck,

You were being kind when you said you thought I’m confused. I was way past confused, partly because I never had to do anything before with the shared folder that contains my media. I thought of my media files as being elsewhere. In any event, Plex is scanning my library. It appears I will have a lot of patchwork to do when the scanning is finished, but that’s better than not having my files.

Is there any reason to retain the Plex shared folder after Plex is running normally again?

Thanks for your help.

After you have completed the transition to DSM 7,

both the Plex shared folder and “Local User” Plex can be removed.
(This is what Synology changed)

The only thing we need in DSM 7 is PlexMediaServer and PlexMediaServer

OK. Thanks.

Hi, I went through this same issue with not properly migrating from DSM 6 to DSM 7. Followed your instructions and got plex working again. Now I have a question. Do I need to do anything with plex before I update from 7.0 to 7.0.1?

@djt2178_gmail_com

If everything is now in DSM 7 structure -

  1. The “Plex” share is empty (or you removed it)
  2. The “PlexMediaServer” shared folder exists and contains your metadata
  3. You’re using 1.24.2.4973 PMS or higher

Then you’re all set.

From this point forward,

  1. Normal DSM updates are fine
  2. Normal PMS updates are fine

I am using the latest version of PMS, my “plexmediaserver” shared folder contains all the things listed above (metadata, media, etc) but I still have my old “Plex” shared folder where I keep my media. That’s the part that confuses me. In one of the forum articles you posted there’s a bold uppercase warning that reads DO NOT PLACE MEDIA ANYWHERE INSIDE THE PlexMediaServer SHARED FOLDER. I initially made the mistake of not prepping for the DSM 7 migration and doing a repair. Then I followed your steps until I got plex to read my files again and got my metadata back. Plex seems to be working fine now, I added some files to the “Plex” shared folder today with no problems.

As of DSM 7,

  1. Because we had to change from the “Plex” shared folder to the “PlexMediaServer” shared folder (it matches the internal package name) —

  2. This makes the Plex share completely available to you for whatever you want to do.

  3. If you look, you’ll find all the warnings were removed from the Plex share because it’s for your use now.

  4. The PlexMediaServer shared folder is exclusively for the program’s use.

Additionally, we have no need of username “Plex” (from DSM 6).
All we care about in DSM 7 is “PlexMediaServer” (both service username, program name, and shared folder name).

OK , so I can move all all my media files to the “PlexMediaServer” shared folder now? If so, how do I do that? Just add folders under “PlexMediaServer” directly so that I have folders for AppData, then Movies, Music, etc?
Also, how come when I hover the mouse over both the “Plex” and “PlexMediaServer” shared folders they show as being the same size (same amount of TB’s used and free) if all my media is still in the “Plex” shared folder?

NO!

Do NOT put ANYTHING in the “PlexMediaServer” shared folder.

If you have media in the “Plex” share – Keep it there.

‘Plex’ shared folder changes

Because the DSM data area storage structure has changed, we were forced to make some decisions. After discussing all the possible configurations out there, we came up with what we think is the best for everyone.

  1. We’ve abandoned the Plex share. We access it one time, during installation, to migrate your existing Plex installation.

  2. Once migrated, you are free to use the shared folder as you wish. You are free to remove it entirely.

  3. PMS no longer is dependent on a Plex share and will no longer create one when installed on a system.

  4. Effective PMS 1.24.2.4973, PlexMediaServer presents a shared folder for the purpose of backing up your metadata and for emergency repairs ONLY.

STORE NO MEDIA IN THE PLEXMEDIASERVER FOLDER

User Plex is no longer needed.

==================================================

Since you have media in the Plex shared folder – Leave it there.
Don’t delete the shared folder. It’s yours now to do as you wish.

Please leave the PlexMediaServer shared folder alone. It is for the exclusive use of Plex Media Server itself.

You will observe there are no notice about putting media in the Plex share.
You will also observe I now placed those notices in the new location.
Please do as I request.

Got it, thanks. I kept reading your posts about deleting the old “Plex” shared folder and that was throwing me off. Thanks for the help.
