Tagging mp3 tracks with explicit tag

Having kids in the home and a whole house audio system, I’m looking to filter tracks with explicit content on demand, e.g. creating a smart playlist which excludes tracks with “(explicit)” in the track title.

Currently, I’m going through and manually identifying tracks and renaming and tagging them by hand.

Does anyone know of an automated way to tag mp3 files, in Plex, mp3tag, Musicbrainz, etc. with an ‘explicit’ tag? Or a public API you can query with an artist / track to return if it’s explicit or not?

I’ve searched the forums and seen some old feature suggestions, but otherwise not much info. Any help appreciated!

TIA!

I don’t think there’s an automated way.

I’m in the same boat as you. I give albums and “Explicit” label and then filter those out on the kids profiles. I know that kicks the whole album for them and not specific songs. I don’t want duplicate files with different names.

ive used mp3 tag with the Apple Music source to tag my music. It brings in an Explicit tag and then through the Action Groups, I have (Explicit) added to the end of the filename and also added to the end of a Title. In plex i can see the (Explicit) in the track name and i created a smart play list that will exclude any song that has that.

this process makes changes directly to the file itself so if anything happens to my plex database, once i re-create the music library the name and tags will still be the same.
