I have wanted a setup like this for a while now. Syncing video itself would be great, but added chat features during playback would be beyond awesome!
I ++++++++ this idea!

Just a couple things to note about using multicast for tandam playback, IPTV like AT&T U-Verse uses multicast, so any plex feature using multicast would have to make sure it is not using the same group space on the LAN.
Another thing, certain routers and firmware, notably DD-WRT, convert multicast traffic to broadcast traffic on the wireless. This would cause flooding and bandwidth saturation on the wireless and eat up the limited bandwidth there. An example of this is located at this blog.
I did check the thread to see if these were presented before, and I did not see them. I apologize if I missed previous entries. While using multicast for tandam play would be amazing, I just wanted to throw these in to indicate that multicast may not be plug-and-play in some common network environments.
Fantastic idea! The feature would be amazing. You could watch movies with family and friends even if they were not beside you. I think I understand why the devs aren’t implementing this, as sometimes transcoding a video leads to lag on one end, but if the hurdles were crossed, it would be fantastic. I would even set up different “theatres” in my house during parties, where groups of people can all watch the same thing in different rooms.
I’m adding my vote to this idea too, this would be so great for watching a show/movie with a friend too far away to see each other in person.
This would be a killer feature beyond understanding if it would include not only music.
Within digital signage for commercial sector these systems cost lots of money, and is heavily used. If the players within the system could be replaced with a low-cost preinstalled raspberry π with only plex player the price for the picture source would drop from many times over. (We use onelan subscribers for our screens now. each player is €800, but these are the more expensive ones with flash support. A raspberry π with preinstalled plex player could be €20 and still make a profit.)
If this feature makes it, make sure its Plex Pass only.
Personally, this is the reason I still use iTunes and has been doing so for ten years. Really neat when synchronised playback is controlled from the iPhone in all rooms.
Nowadays there are several friends using the Sonos system for this, but for lots of years I was quite unique with this feature. As soon as Airport express wifi router with this feature in airfoil was launched I set this up. This was way before the iPhone, and I used Salling Clicker on an Ericsson phone to control iTunes. Happy dayz when Apple added synchronised playback in iTunes about five years ago (?).
Before this setup I had an application I made my self in 1999 in realbasic development environment (now named Xojo Studio) for Mac OS8 where guests could select songs from multiple touch screens to add songs to the shared playlist. speaker cables to make it sound in all rooms. oh those were fun times, nice parties.

I have multiple airport expresses connected around my house that are begging for this feature! And keep rockin’ the house Team Plex!
Support for Airport express would be something completely else. You can today use airfoil to take the sound from a single plex player to multiple airport express or other compatible devices.
As a parent this is the feature I’d most like to see implemented, however, not sure if this has been mentioned but I’d like to see it implemented as a local media Simulcast. I’d be happy to keep a copy of the media on both devices even, just have them sync together via WiFi direct or Bluetooth. That would suit my needs entirely for long car journeys. A good parental feature would be to allow a third admin device to act as the controls for volume/playback/pause to allow parents in the front to control what the kids experience (and to stop fighting between the kids!). Cheers! PS how do I vote?
Please implement this feature, a must have!
Please add this feature soon <3
I would use this a LOT.
I have an open floorplan and tend to watch a show when doing chores, cooking, etc. End up walking from room to room and through open areas. Having my kitchen tablet (wall mounted), the laundry room tablet (same, wall mounted), and the living room tv synced would be fantastic. Right now, I basically just crank up the audio but I can do that when the significant other is sleeping after a night shift. Then I’m packing my Roku remote around with headphones in
anyway, can I +3 this for how awesome the idea is???!

Yes really a great feature ! It will make the difference for me ! Especially for music in order to do multi-room if you want (movie is more complicated I think).
+1 would love this feature especially with the Chromecast Audio now out.
+1 on this. Would force me to build a Raspberry Pi Plex server for my car so that the kids can all watch the same thing on individual tablets.
+1 please make this happen!
Thinking on about this it would introduce true multi room functionality when used for music. That would be a killer feature.

OK, a spin-off idea, and probably a first step in realizing this feature: just cast the Audio of the movie to the other devices (e.g iPhone/Android app). This way you’ll a)solve sync issues faster and b) have a roku-like feature where you can see a movie on a TV and have the audio on your headphones connected to you phone. Great featue to have if you have small kids and wish to see a movie without waking everybody up.
This is a separate request you’ll find elsewhere on the forum - it would be
great if you add your vote there as well!

Ambilight would be possible on Smart TVs. An additional stream would also allow implementation of ‘ambilight’ where it’s not currently possible Roku, Firestick etc?
Can’t wait for this.
+1 This would be so great!
