Telling people to search before asking is horrible advice when topics are removed

probably 75% of the questions I search for have people or moderators telling others to search before asking, then they link to the answer that has been removed. Great, so not only did they link them to a dead topic I can’t access, but they also prevented me from getting an answer by blocking that guy’s question.

Why are topics deleted anyways? Just archive them. It’s not like storing text takes up any data.

Many links are broken not because topics have been deleted but rather they are due to a bug that occurred when Plex transitioned to their current Discourse forums.

When the transition happened many links that were in the old forum simply got broken. Lately there have been some posts that were deleted or merged because of the huge outcry about the new Roku interface but those threads are duplicated by others and mostly in no way unique.

There is a fix in that you can change part of the broken link to make it work again but I cannot remember exactly what that fix is. Maybe someone else will chime in and share that fix.

right click and open in new tab/window. I can’t remember off hand what the fix was to rewrite link but if you know of one that is broken i can probably figure it out quick

I always try to search but often find nothing specific enough to satisfy my query.

In general I find Discourse to be incredibly difficult to find anything. Information is spread out over far too many threads and topics. IMO it’s a terrible public forum for this purpose.

Perhaps a “search 101” would be in order for this repository???
