Transcode literally doesn’t work. It keeps buffering all the time on dedicated machine which has nothing on it. Only plex, all the drivers and nothing else.
Specs. I7700k 5Ghz, 1080Ti, 16GB ram.
4GB of ram is being reserved for transcode folder to make things quicker.
Server even struggle to play original versions of the movies. Ridiculous how can you charge money for something that does not work.
All the devices are connected via Ethernet cable. Library is located on the NAS, meta data on PCs SSD.
How is it even possible that fairly fast machine can’t transcode or even play original files?
you will need to post more info.
1-what files are not playing?
2- have you tried turned off hardware acceleration?
3- network? or is it also not playing on the dedicated machine?
4-drivers up to date?
5- tried not using a ram disk? 4GB is not enough if you are playing a large 4k movie and some 1080p movies
1 trying to play 4k HEVC files.
2 tried turn off hardware acceleration, but cpu isn’t powerful enough to transcode on its own. It is maxed out at 100%. I’ve removed 1080Ti and used intel dedicated graphic with intel quick sync but that doesn’t work to well neither.
3 All of my home network is on a cable. Dedicated one too. What I mean is that NAS where I store my files is connected directly to the router. Same with PC.
4 All drivers are up to date. I have a clean windows install. It is a dedicated plex machine. There is literally nothing on it. Just Plex.
5 Tried not using RAM and it does not make any difference. I’ve actually downloaded a software which creates a physical drive which I use as a temporary transcode directory. 4 GB is more than enough. It never goes above 2 GB as it transcodes and once file is played it is automatically deleted.
If your server cant direct play without buffering there is an issue somewhere else, no point into looking 4k transcodes if something can’t even handle reading a file directly.
4GB Ramdisk is not enough unless you only play small files one at a time. My transcode dir maxed out at 28,9G over the last month
Verify that it is indeed direct playing. If it is, download the file locally and see if it plays fine locally to exclude file corruption, even if it is unlikely. Ditch the ramdisk (for now).
Test the bandwidth between the 2 devices, with iperf3 for example. Test the read speed of the storage, with dd for example.
Check if any other process is consuming resources while stuttering occurs, even if there is nothing else on it.
Try to read the file manually from the storage to the plex machine and measure speed.
Then do the same with the client device and the plex server machine.
Is your client connected via wifi? Same network? Remote?
