The "new" and "improved" Plex TV guide

Server Version#: 1.16.6.1559
Player Version#: 3.108.2

What happened to the TV guide??? It is so rudimentary that it is almost useless by
switching to “Powered by Plex”. The previous TV guide allowed me to search for future shows by channel, category etc. This “new” and poor excuse for “improved” only offers following tabs:

  • Recommended
  • Guide
  • DVR Schedule

I have a live time PLEX pass but recent decisions made by developers leave me scratching my head saying “what the hell were they thinking???”. Is this only temporary and the missing features will be added or are we stuck with this crippled excuse for a TV guide.

I am a patient man and understand growing pains in development or trying to “improve” on existing architecture but c’mon. You are not a company operating out of some mama’s garage, aren’t you? Reading recent news, you have signed a contract with Warner Bros to provide streaming via Plex, so that means you must be serious about your product. So why such a huge step back in the space of live TV programming?

I’m done venting now.

I’m also frustrated by this change and hope that it is temporary as you’ve stated. I loved being able to search for new shows by category.

Forget about searching. The guide data is just flat wrong. You can’t search what isn’t there. They can’t even get the NBC Nightly News episodes to show the correct airing date. They literally killed their DVR.

I am also missing the ability to create a scheduling agent for a certain keyword. Now the name has to be taken straight from the epg guide. Maybe I have missed it but it worked better before the change at the end if June.

This issue will go away from the 24th September airings for this show

Anybody from Plex would care to comment on this issue? Obviously it’s a huge step back. What I hate the most about software companies nowadays is the constant “look, we’ve added a new feature and made the button look better” yet the features that used to work great get broke and somehow nobody get around to fix them again (TV Guide is a case in point). So, what about it, Plex?

With regards to tags and genre - that is coming. I do not have a date for it but it will be available

For anything else, please tell me exactly what feature has gone away and what plex client and what interface there was that is no longer there. I will look into it

I can think of one useful feature I miss from the “old” web interface: The ability to display all TV shows being aired during the period covered by the EPG data. In the old web interface, one could navigate to the Live TV & DVR section and click the “Channels” drop-down for additional choices, including: Movies, News, Sports, and Shows. Selecting one would show all airings of that type for the period covered by the guide. While the same functionality exists for Movies, News, and Sports in the new web interface via the various “Upcoming” sections under Live TV & DVR -> Recommended, the same is not true for Shows.

This feature allowed for the easy browsing of TV shows which one might wish to record as it was generally a good representation of all the shows currently being aired on all available channels. As far as I can tell there isn’t a way to easily accomplish the same when using the new experience.

Thanks philipsw. I could not have said it better.

Your post is spot-on philipsw! I confess to only using the EPG to browse and DVR movies from specific channels - and the “new and improved” interface has removed key filters, and makes my task almost impossible. To me, this is a giant step backward, in terms of functionality. Very disappointed with the new EPG!

Be great to have regional TV settings … I live on the south coast but have to watch local news for Cambridge. Come on Plex this has been rolling for several months now

The comments expressed here really presented the core issues. I have used Plex for a couple years now. When I added tuners to my set-up I really liked the ability to search programs or movies by genre. The first thing to go with the new EPG was the extensive genes. Now the search is gone. These are the features we would like returned.

Thank you to the PLEX team for bringing “Browse” function back to “Live TV & DVR”. Now it brings back functionality lost after switching TV guide providers. Just installed and updated the server. Good job!

Client web version: 4.8.4
Server version: 1.18.2.2015

Well, I spoke too soon and should have tested it before complementing PLEX team for a job well done. After selecting the “Guide” in TV & Live DVR, I lost all other choices and the "Guide is the only option. There is no Grid nor other options available prior to selecting the Guide.

Gentlemen, any ideas what happened here?

Err, Plex guys, I have no live TV guide nor DVR after the latest upgrade to 1.18.2.2015… The only thing I have now is the added TV browseable Guide, without TV grid capabilities. Can I roll it back?

This is why I have stopped installing from the Beta channel. My setup is totally “production” for my household. I do not have a test setup. I also do not upgrade anymore until I have read on the forums that a public release is bug minimal. For example, I am still on 1.18.0 because too many issues have been reported with Public 1.18.1. This of course is all personal discretion. I really like Plex and as a user for 3 years am now at a point where function and performance (under 1.18.0) have risen to the “toaster” standard (defined as I don’t have to think about it - it does what it is supposed to do).

So there is no drop down menu? Which url are you using, hosted our local?

I assume after clicking Browse, you can now click the Episode, By Airing and other drop downs to access additional options.

Yes.

No. That option is gone. I rolled back to the prior release. Sorry guys. Too many headaches.
