It’s been a long time coming, but the company we all paid money to support has been replaced with what ever this new garbage is.
We paid money to support the addition of features and self hosted options that defined what this tool was created for. What did we get in return? Another company pulling the rug.
The only thing i had to look forward to every night was watching a movie with my wife while I’m working out of country. Guess what i discovered tonight? A big f you, because plex just needs to be the next hulu/Netflix.
I’d demand a refund, considering the product now isnt what i paid money for then. But we all know thats not happening. Give it a few minutes and all the “that feature was free” garbage worshipers will be here commenting.
The fact is. Plex is dead.
This isnt Plex. This is the temu hulu company now.
If you don’t want to pay, then you can stop using Plex and use a free alternative. Plex has been run like a real company for a long time now, they have expenses, bills, and staff to pay, not sure why you’re just starting realize that.
After using it for over 10 years, the moment they introduce the new subscription, I’m already looking for another program. I honestly hope the company goes down as soon as possible after this move. Am I the only one who’s reminded of an episode from the new season of Black Mirror by this?
If we just ignore the recent problems with the new PE app, if I’m just looking at the value of what I get in return for what they’re charging, then for me, Plex is absolutely worth it, even with the new pricing model. Of course, value is subjective; that’s why I said if it’s not worth it for you, there are free alternatives.
I also paid for four Plex lifetime passes over the years, I give them to people, and I like supporting Plex, so this lifetime price change doesn’t affect me at all. The people who are complaining about the remote access change have been the freeloaders.
How about this: let users keep the old version without account sync, sell the new version with it.
The outrage over the “Watch Pass” is because absent any new features the user is paying all the costs to host, stream, and transcode the content. Plex is literally performing a similar level of work to a bittorrent tracker by pointing users at each other’s IP and getting out of the way. The “cost” that exists here for Plex as a company is exclusively from Plex requiring logins. That’s it.
If you think Plex should be a pay-first software, go for it. But that has not been the business model for the last decade and changing the deal once users are integrated is scummy.
Users are not freeloaders. No one is freeloading. Someone is paying for internet, paying for hardware, paying for electricity to run it all. It isn’t Plex doing that.
Purchased a Plex Pass lifetime well over a decade ago when it was like $74.99. Best purchase I ever made!
Nothing has changed for me with the current updates. The old Plex I bought into all those years ago is still working perfect for me! PMS still works flawlessly, I run PM4K on an Ugoos and Infuse on multiple Apple TV setups in my home. All flawless. Plexamp still works great for music. So me and my family are using Plex daily for everything and all is 100% still working!
Plex is still king, and while I have done my fair share of complaining against certain moves by Plex, the forums seem overrun with unnecessary drama.
Airplay? Nobody in my family uses that kind of workflow for movies or TV. If we want to play on TV, we use an ATV 4K or the main Ugoos AM6B+ which plays all codecs. If we want to play on a phone or tablet well Infuse is usually the better option.
Do some of you ever think that maybe YOU are using Plex wrong? Or at least not in a way that demonstrates the strengths of it? If I know a particular software is not great at 1 thing, why force that software to make that the priority?
Not defending Plex, it literally just works for me and my entire family and we have used it daily for well over a decade.
As someone who works with a lot of complex systems every day, user error is VERY common. And usually the cause of most peoples grievances with a company.
I am down to explore new hardware options. I’ve never used Apple TV before. Up until this week a simple chromecast device was all I needed. I was hoping to avoid shelling out hundreds of dollars in new hardware expenses to make the new app work though.
I have a big complaint about the update in that I watched all the movies from my library on the iPad with a keyboard, rewinded the left-right buttons, stopped and turned on the viewing with the Space button. All this doesn’t work now. A very small Play button, which is difficult to get through. At least fix it. I’ve never used LiveTV and it’s not what I need.
My server, my life-time subscription and viewing on remote devices are enough for me. Now I’m having huge problems with it.
