There is something wrong with Plex

I’ve been tempted a few times to update to Premium but I’m glad I didn’t do it. When everything seems to be in order, Plex works beautifully. But when it starts barking, it can be very painful.

I think the whole thing is not ready for prime time. Particularly the Apple TV client which, I must admit, really sucks. How on Earth can it tell me my connection to the server is not fast enough when I have 3 Apple Airport Extreme covering the basement, each reporting an excellent connection in Airport Utility when checked on my iPhone 5 feet from my Apple TV? My network supports 300Mbps, there is no way that my connection is not fast enough to my Mac mini server which only runs the Plex media server.

Am I the only one to have those problems? When are they going to fix it instead of adding more features that are totally useless to me?

Yes, I’m really pissed off right now, trying to watch something and having the feed constantly interrupted with this stupid message about my connection not being fast enough.

Plex sometimes gets bandwidth and transcoding issues mixed up.
Given you’re not providing information as for what kind of files you’re trying to stream … what information is showing in the “now playing” tile for that playback on the Plex server dashboard? – any remarks about the media being transcoded / throttling / buffering?

I’m a bit cautious about claims on WLAN performance. Those tend to highly depend on environmental factors – last not least where your devices are placed (I’ve seen users complain a Plex client on a streaming box locked in a metal tv-rack wasn’t getting the WLAN’s theoretical max. lab bandwidth – to be fair… that’s been quite an extreme case).

Personally I find the Apple TV to be one of the best clients (maybe aside of the capability to pass-through some high-end audio formats).

Hello Tom.

I was trying to watch an HD movie that was not full HD, Captain Phillips. I tried to downgrade the playback down to 720p but the movie was still stuttering and I was getting this stupid message about my connection not being fast enough. I finally ended up playing the movie in Plex on my Mac mini server and then using AirWatch to transmit the picture and sound to my Apple TV. The movie played without a hitch, not a single interruption or even stutter. So much for the connection not fast enough. The picture was perfect, it was clearly HD. Other than that, I don’t know what else you would need to know. I did restart the server, I did restart the Apple TV, the problem persisted.

There are a few things that are annoying like the pictures of the cast that appear and then suddenly disappear. Things that have not convinced me that premium is worth it…
