There seems to be a bug with retrieving the titles

According to TMDB’s guidelines, the translated title field should be left blank and locked when the translated title is the same as the original title.

However, currently, when Plex retrieves movie or TV show titles, if the library language matches the original title language of the item and the translated title in TMDB is empty due to being the same as the original title language, Plex retrieves an empty title for the library language.

In previous versions, when encountering this situation, Plex should have used the original title as the item title, since the original title and the library language were consistent. However, now, when the translated title for the library language is empty, for example, in Chinese, Plex uses Hanyu Pinyin instead of Chinese characters as the title, which is not the original title. I suspect this might be sourced from IMDb’s title, as IMDb does not support Chinese, so IMDb’s Chinese item titles are represented in Hanyu Pinyin. This results in Plex being unable to display the library language’s title.

This issue did not exist before. Please investigate where the problem lies. Thank you.

Example: World's Greatest Dad (2023) — The Movie Database (TMDB), World's Greatest Dad (2023) - IMDb, My library language is set to Chinese, but i got title “Er shou jie zuo” instead of “二手杰作”.

I’ve encountered the same issue as well, hoping Plex officials fix it soon.

Just so you are aware. The new modern plex agent/scanners use a consolidated metadata approach. Metadata can come from imdb, tmdb and/or tvdb as just a few examples. There is currently no way to tell plex, go get all metadata from tmdb. Many folks are confused by this.

So as an example take the Harry Potter movies. For UK, some of the movies use titles/summaries from imdb others use tmdb, cast credits comes tmdb and genre comes from all three. Its a right mess if you expect data to come from one source.

Feel free to vote [Feature Request] Ability to specify Metadata from a single source (IMDB, TMDB or TVDB) if it’s of interest but I’m not hopefully this will ever be implemented.

I’ve left a message supporting your suggestion, but what I’m actually referring to is another issue. The rule regarding TMDB has always been in place. In the past year, even when the original language matched the library language and the Chinese translation title on TMDB was empty, Plex could still retrieve the Chinese title. However, it seems that’s no longer the case. There must be some issue somewhere.

The old The Movie Database agent doesn’t have this issue, but the new agent does. Please fix this bug!
