Keep getting the message “There was not enough free disk space to start the recording” on recordings I’m trying to make. This is generally happening for films / longer recordings (eg. ICC World Cup Cricket on attached log), whereas 30 min shows tend to record OK (eg. Lego Ninjago on attached log).
PMS installed on an Nvidia Shield TV 16GB (6GB internal free) with a 128GB USB3 shared drive (with over 100GB free), but using a 4GB WD NAS drive to store recordings. Transcoding using a folder on my NAS drive, which has well over 2GB free. Plex Media Server.2.log (5.0 MB) Only started happening in last couple of weeks
thanks for the info, however, the Transcoder temporary directory was already set up to point at a folder on my NAS drive. I’ve tried creating new folders on the NAS drive, and pointing the temporary directory to these, but to no avail. I can still only record programmes around 30 minutes long. I’ve also tried pointing the directory to a folder on the Nvidia Shield, but this leads to Plex only recording the first few minutes of any recording I set. It’s confusing, because it was working fine until a few weeks ago, but nothing I try now seems to be able to get it to work again.
As of the 1.16.1 update, this has been happening to me with all of my Women’s World Cup (attempted) recordings.
After recording group stage matches without complaint under the old version, it has started failing repeatedly now that the knockout rounds are underway.
Had a look at the error messages in my logs and noticed that the files that were recording were being stored to “/storage/WDMYCLOUD/…” i.e. starting the path with “/storage/…”.
Tried changing the “transcoder temporary directory” (found under settings - transcoder - show advanced) to start with “/storage/…”. Seems to be working OK at the moment
I have found the answer to fix the DVR recording on Shield or NAS when it says ‘not enough disk space to start recording’. In the DVR settings, you need to select ‘Transcode’ video during recording. Then, in the General settings, into the Transcode Tab, you need to put a temporary repertory. I’ve choosen the writable directory on my external USB 2 TB HDD and it fixed the problem once and for all.
I do have a Shield and on the main storage there is less than 16 GB of free space. Plex DVR needs a minimum of 12 GB to start recording shows that are longer than 1 hour. When you put a temporary directory into Transcode, Plex will use this directory to temporarely save the recording program and it will then, once finish recording, copy the program in the choosen directory.
I hope this tip helps some of you to fix this issue…
Thanks for this info Heultmien.
I have always had Plex set up to use a folder I created on my WD MYCLOUD NAS drive as a Transcoder temporary directory, and did not change this folder/location until this error message started appearing in recent weeks. I have tried setting up new folders for Plex to point at for Transcoding on my NAS drive, but to no avail. I can only imagine that something has changed after an update (to PMS), because looking at the logs, it seems that Plex is finding that this folder (or whichever one I point it to on my NAS drive) has ‘read-only’ access, which would explain why the ‘not enough disk space’ error message keeps appearing.
I’ve tried changing the Transcoder directory to a folder on my NAS drive that I know I’m still able to record 30 min shows to, which I know has ‘write-access’, and currently this seems to be working on a couple of longer recordings I have in progress. I’ll report back tomorrow if this works -as I hope it’ll help anyone else experiencing similar issues
This seems to have worked - still not sure why Plex started to view my previous Transcode directory as ‘read-only’, but now that I’ve changed it to another folder, this now seems to be working again
It seems like it works. Once I read where you need 12gb to start a recording to the dvr if the show is longer than 1 hour, I took a look at my hdd, and found out that my external hdd was just connected but I guess I had forgotten to format it so that it was tied to the shield. Once I did that there was plenty of space, and haven’t been getting the not enough free disk space error. They should make the error say something about how much space the dvr needs, because I never knew that limitation. I didn’t need to put a temp. directory as things have been going well since, but if I have any problems pop up I’ll try that next as well.
Thanks - Changing the transcoder directory to /storage/A826-7067/NVIDIA_SHIELD/Temp also seemed to fix the recordings. Problem started right after upgrade to Version 1.16.3.1402. I had to upgrade as my DVR no longer got a guide anymore under the older version. Weird that the Shield did not auto-upgrade, I had to force it from the play store.
