Thinking of buying a new system/server for PlexConnect

Hi guys,

I'm after a new system/server to solely use with Apple TV2 and PlexConnect. I want the cheapest (and hopefully still smallest) system that can keep up the task of transcoding at 1080p etc..

Any ideas?

Thanks  :)

The Apple TV2 is only capable of 720p output.

I converted an old (free from junk bin) MacMini 1,1 to 2,1 with a new Core2Duo CPU (T7600 at 2.3 GHz) costing $50 plus 4 GB of RAM ($25) and a spare 256 GB Vertex 3 SSD. Total hardware cost was $75.  After fixing Python version problems in Snow Leopard, it uses PMS and PC to stream to an ATV2 over 1 Gbps LAN.  Seems to do it fine for 720p.  If you want 1020p, you'll need an ATV3 at least (it might be a bad time to buy new now because new ATV is rumored) and maybe an intel Core i5 MacMini to handle the transcoding.  Refurbished late model i5 MacMinis from Apple are about $700 and more—a significantly larger spend.

(it might be a bad time to buy new now because new ATV is rumored)

A refreshed Mac mini is likely to drop sooner than a new Apple TV (source).

I typically go here looking for hardware:

Sorry, hit the wrong number on my keyboard, is in fact an Apple TV3..

Thats a cheap setup you mentioned above, I might look at a similar route.. My current MacBook Pro (2009) Core 2 Duo deals with the transcoding with no issue, so a similar spec would suffice I would say?

Thanks for all the help!

Would something like this be up to the job?

I would check out the site Wahlman mentioned.  Don't be skeptical or afraid to build your own.  In addition to what he said, pick you what you want then look for deals on http://pcpartpicker.com/ .  If Wahlman has time, he will help you a great machine.  He was with me all the way when we built our beasts.  Good luck.  As far as what you have posted, I would say it's okay, but you want to prepare yourself for the future.
