Best Plex direct to TV?

I’ve been using an ATV2 to stream Plex from a computer, but several factors have led me to want to have a dedicated stand alone system running Plex directly in to my TV. What other options are there besides a Mac Mini (I’d like to go cheaper than that)? I came across a Shuttle X350 and X6100. Does any one have experience with either of those, or something else? Thanks!

Hi,

If you are into HD content, avoid the X350 - it doesn't have the processing speed you'll need. You will be able to use the GPU in it (especial the Nvidia ION model) though there are still some media formats which dont work well with GPU assisted decoding.

PS: if you are ruling the mini out, you are really after the 2nd best. Yes it may cost more, but the connivance and simplicity in getting it to work cannot be beaten.

So that being the case, is the current $600 Mac mini enough power or is the $800 required? I run mostly 720P material and the occasional 1080P movie, with the largest file being around 7 GBs. Most are 720P MKVs around 2-3 GBs. I'm also aware that new Mac Minis are probably coming out soon, so are these fine or should I wait and see what the new ones have? Thanks.

The "base/little/mini" Mini is fine.
