iTunes was great once. I keep a VM of Win7 around only to manage my on Phone music library. I have a Apple Playlist called “on Phone” which I add/delete music to and sync with my iPhone.
I’ve recently found (and really enjoy) Plexamp and I am seriously thinking of using it instead of iTunes. I’ve read the forums and started to see a potential strategy in this goal.

I can export my M3U8 “on phone” playlist from Apple to Plex server using the post method mentioned in the forums. This will get all my media from the server that iTunes is managing on the phone, but instead of managed by iTunes to be managed by Plex.

I can then use Plexamp to download this new “onPhoneinPlexamp” playlist, but there appears to be a 24 hour limit. I’ve read the response from the team that download capability wasn’t designed for the needs of a full on phone library.

Currently “All Music” has decent navigation, but navigation inside a downloaded playlist is not great, it certainly is not by Artist. This appears to be part of the things to address for a full on phone library.

Management of my full download library via a single “onPhone” playlist has been very easy with iTunes. As I add/remove Artists and Songs from the playlist I need only resync, and Apple only makes the changes. As the Plex development team look at providing stronger support for downloaded content, I would recommend they consider this approach. Awesome app.
