I just was watching a movie and wanted to re-watch the last 15 minutes so I skipped ahead close to it and when it started to play, 3 secs later a Commercial popped up. I didn’t watch it as I was too flabbergasted and trying to get my movie back playing. When I paused it, It paused but wouldn’t allow me to play the movie until I let the commercial finish and then the movie came right back on like I was watching YouTube and I cant stand to watch any YouTube anymore because there are 90 commercials an hour anymore. So WHAT GIVES? I paid for a Plex Pass & now I have to deal with random commercials thrown at me? Anyone else have this happen to them? Every time I turn around, something is going downwards in quality on Plex anymore. the Search often leaves me with no result no matter how specific I am & that NEVER used to happen. Now I have to go look things up in the exact library & sort by Alphabet instead of recently added. So seriously, what gives? What is going on with the Commercials & WHY do we have them at all now? Mind you I don’t use any of the Live TV or extra channel stuff so I should not be getting commercials in any way shape or form unless something has changed & if it has, it’s not what I paid for.
Are you sure you were watching YOUR version of the movie?
This happened recently to someone else on here
ive had this and it turned out i was watching one of Plex’s movies and not my own downloads
Just to amend the previous answers: Plex does not add any ads/commercials to your own media.
Ads are involved when it comes to their video-on-demand service.
Wait for it… This is going to be good…
I’m positive it was my copy. I never have used any of the other movie/tv services & I just finished watching it, rewound it 20 mins and re-watched the end. It was The Holcraft Covenant. It’s a bit older, Not certain it would even be on your thing. Like I said, after the commercial played, my movie continued from that spot & I don’t think you can skip 1 Hour & 40 minutes + into a Movie on those types of “Free” services & I watched it from my “Continue Watching Section” because the night before I got unexpected company & had to stop iy half way through… so unless other FREE services FFwd or REW that much time in one click mind you on the Progress Bar that disappears after a few seconds, AND it also somehow infiltrates my “Continue Watching” Section, then I am at a loss. I believe something really strange happened. Maybe it’s the (Un) Intelligence services. Apparently they only have time to illegally surveil Americans instead of Foreign Criminals & strange stuff happens with electronic things around here like odd noises sometimes but never a full Commercial via my Plex Movie Section.
Movies and shows provided from plex can be FF/REW as much as you want. You may get a commercial right away before the video plays. Things you watch from Plex’s content will also show up on the Continue Watching section. Having a Plex Pass does not prevent seeing commercials from Plex’s content.
Do you have prerolls setup? I don’t think those play when you resume but that could be a bug and the ad you saw was your preroll?
If you can provide your PMS logs, I can look if that playback is still there and check what played.
I thought I had all of those services turned off. I know The “Web isodes” section I had turned off. Is there a way to turn these extra services off completely? I have Trailers as “Play 0” Before or after unless that got changed on an update & I only watch trailers before I am looking for a movie or showing someone else what a movie is about when trying to decide with company. Not sure but it was real strange and it was a New Commercial. I think it was Gene Simmons hawking something
Yes. https://support.plex.tv/articles/video-on-demand-overview/ That guide is for the free movies and Shows. You do the same for any service you don’t want enabled.
Seems you where watching the Movies & Shows On Plex Version
Since I don’t own that movie and a search found it in their services section.
Wait for it…
LOL - I made this mistake too a while back…but I quickly exited and I had to investigate because I was shocked…I realized then what I had done. But I will say that if I ever saw commercials while playing back my own media…Oh lawd have mercy that would be horrible if that ever happened.
Are we waiting for something specifically or are you spamming/bumping your post count?
The moment of enlightenment…
Thanks for the OFF switches post MovieFan.Plex. It was helpful some.
But again, since I was already watching it from my own movie Section & rewound it 20 mins or so to re-watch the end (because the recent past & today, the Politicians are doing exactly what was stated at the end of that movie), & it was resumed originally from my “Continue Watching” section. I find it hard to believe that I was slipped a mickey & in a stupor selected that movie which I had been watching for approx. the last hour in my Movie Section & somehow selected it, FFWD to the End or watched it til the end (when I originally continued) and rewound it from the end of a Free Service I have never used.(unless somehow if you continue from your home owned section, it can switch itself and pick up in the free section where I left off). Either way, and wait for it… I have used Plex since BEFORE it was a paid service. I think I know how my Own Server sections work. I think I can tell when I am watching something on my server or not, especially when I never looked ANYWHERE ELSE to play it. So thanks for the help & the snarky remarks from wiseguy___, but something other than what you are claiming happened, because I never used anything but My MOVIE section & my CONTINUED Section.
Peace. I wont be back to check on this thread. I’ll be using Plex Amp since my subscription covers it but I will be going elsewhere asap for other media streaming my own content. I already have a few recommendations. I’ve been thinking about moving my stuff for awhile now and this just confirms what I already know… Thanks for “Plex Amp” as I Love it & use it always now but I don’t think Plex in general, listens to customers concerns much anymore either so I guess that’s that. Thanks for everything, luck all
No idea what’s going on in this thread but whilst trying to sort your issues have you seen these settings in the advice you have been given…I only ask as I haven’t seen a direct link to them in any replies
Some of this stuff is enabled my default and actually needs turning off/opting out.
Movies have the same ID regardless of source.
I don’t think Continue Watching is linked to a specific library or an exact file. I think it uses the Movie’s ID/GUID.
When multiple local versions of a movie exist, even in different libraries, Plex can sometimes resume playback of the “wrong” version. There’s a recent post regarding this with two versions of a movie in different local libraries.
Perhaps a larger scale version of the same thing happened here??
If you can reproduce it, player logs would be very interesting.
Movies from Plex and movies from your own library should not get mixed up. Mine on the left, from Plex on the right. You can see they have different play progress so not tracked together.

(I agree; I haven’t been able to duplicate this. I should have said local movies have the same ID regardless of Library, and that it was a total random unfounded conjecture that maybe something similar was going on. I see the same thing you show in your screenshot.)
Watch History is even stored differently for local vs. Plex movies! IDK how that could get mixed up.
