This new android app is awful, where can I download the previous version?

Thank you so much! I’m even considering canceling my PlexPass. The current version is garbage.

Just wanted to thank all the commenters for the helpful information, in particular @jclifton!!

This newest update was, obviously, not well tested, nor was it run past users by their marketing team. Shame! It used to work reasonably well.

My Feedback on the New Plex App

When the new app first launched, it was an absolute disaster. It crashed for no reason, loading times were long, and many of the features I used frequently were just gone.

Now, four months into this “New Experience,” I use Plex daily on my tablet, phone, and laptop. The crashes have become less frequent, and loading times are okay. Still, the app feels incredibly laggy. When I try to go back one screen, it often jumps back two. The worst part is still switching libraries. It feels like 5 clicks and a lot of scrolling instead of the old 2 with Hamburger Drawer.

The second worst thing, and a feature I used constantly for business trips, is the auto-download function, which no longer exists. I now always have to manually ensure I have something to watch.

Another major issue is downloading many different, smaller series. In this scenario: I want to make 2 seasons from 8 different series available offline.

New App:

  • Go to library → Select a series → Long-press on Season 1 → Tap download.

  • The mobile app then jumps back to a random place in the library, so I have to start all over again.

  • Search for the series (scroll), wait for it to load, scroll to the season. Long-press Season 2, etc.

Old App:

  • Go to library → Select a series → Long-press on Season 1 → Tap download.

  • A great dialog pops up with options. Crucially, you stay in the same window!

  • Long-press Season 2 → Tap download. This is how it should be!

This is also a problem when viewing and deleting downloads.

New App: Every single item is listed individually. If I’ve downloaded 200 episodes, do I really have to delete each one separately and confirm the deletion? Even the swipe gesture for deletion is laggy! Or the ui jumps to a other element after deletion. There isn’t even a “Delete All” button!

Old App: Downloads were always neatly sorted by series and season. This was clear and simple. Delete Seasion? No Problem. Delete all? No Problem. Delete single Element? No Problem.

To put it another way, with the new app, the scenario mentioned above took me 2 hours on my old Galaxy Tab A6. After that, I uninstalled the “New Experience” and installed version 10.26. I was done in 10 minutes. Its not only that awful on old crappy devices like the A6, its also on a Google Pixel 7 Pro, Xiaomi Pad 7, Samsung Galaxy S9 Fe+ and Huawei P30 Pro.

After that, I downgraded all my devices to version 10.26.

I gave the new app a long and honest try, but I’m sorry—it’s just not good. The old app instantly won me over and showed me exactly why I chose Plex in the first place.

And it seems the whole thing is repeating itself now with Roku. I hope the Server will not get this “New Experience” to soon. RIP Plex.

I’ve just stopped using the new app. It’s too frustrating. Whoever designed this “navigation” must be named Rube Goldberg.

On mobile devices, you can just load the Plex website and it’s more like the old app. At least you can navigate without having to Google search how to find stuff every time.

Such a shame. I hope someone develops a new front end app that can utilize PMS but make it intuitive again.

I didn’t have many issues with the new app for video but I don’t watch a lot on my phone either.

What I do do (ha ha) on my phone is use Plexamp. It is frustrating that there is not an easy intuitive way to add playlists based on folders. I get that you can pick moods, styles etc… but Plex is made for YOUR media. My media happens to be organized by folders. What I consider a certain genre may not line up with the genre Plexamp chooses plus I don’t have near as many genres. Is it really that hard to be able to long click / select a folder and add it to a playlist? Other than this quirk I have really been enjoying Plexamp after years of not considering it. I preferred to play from local storage (less battery/bandwidth/available in concrete boxes regardless of connection).

Oh and thank you for the steps to download the older app. This workaround of a workaround is still working.

So has anyone tried the last version yet? Has it improves in any form? Or we still looking at the least intuitive UI for plex in history? The old version still works splendidly, so no rush for me to switch so far.

No improvements thus far.

Thank you!!! Now I can finally “watch live” on a currently recording OTA show again. You rock. And I can’t believe Plex hasn’t resolved this.
