Tidal playlist integration

Hi guys, I’m a recent crossover from Google play music and have been trying out the plex/tidal integration.

The reason I used Google play music is it seamlessly integrated my mp3 collection into my streaming service. Unfortunately the youtube music implementation is terrible so I’ve been looking for alternatives, like many others I’m sure.

I have been a long time plex user for video and the tidal integration looked super promising, so I got a lifetime plex pass and started moving everything over.

The album/artist side of things is brilliant, exactly what I needed. But the playlist integration is pretty much nonexistent, which is a real deal breaker for me.

What I really want to avoid is having my music in two places, and with the current integration I need to use both the plex app and the tidal app which is getting messy.

So specifically what I would like to do from within the plex app is:

  1. Save a tidal playlist to my collection.
  2. Add tracks to an existing tidal playlist.
  3. Something similar to Tidals explore function would be useful addition.

I’m sad nobody has replied. I’m in the same exact situation as you.

Yeah I’m sad too, pretty much completely ignored over here.

Do Plex employees look at this forum or should I be posting this somewhere else?

It does take a little getting used to. It used to drive me nuts for the reasons you mention, but that’s because it’s not supposed to be integration of your Tidal collection. Basically I find the best way to look at it is that your Plex library has access to THE Tidal library, not YOUR Tidal library. This can actually be considered a good thing as in essence you have two independent libraries, one via Plex and Plexamp and the other via the Tidal app. I think, having experimented with Plex music since they first included Tidal, that this is actually the best approach. One or the other library would just be a mess with cross pollution over long-term use, seeing as Plex is based around YOUR collection + Tidal, while Tidal is just Tidal.
I switched to using Plexamp as my primary music app and using Tidal as a music discovery service. The resulting libraries look quite different, I do wish Tidal kept (or had the option to keep) play counts of tracks accessed via Plex, so that the My Mix playlists would reflect what I usually listen to - but I guess that is in the hands of Tidal rather than Plex.
If you use the Plexamp app you can switch between the two libraries quite easily, but it’s still a matter of dealing with MyTidal and My Collection as separate entities. You can add tracks and albums the the other library, but not to their respective playlists.

Thanks for the Plexamp suggestion, I’ll have a look into it.

I understand your point regarding Plex having access to the Tidal library, but not my own specifically. I’m actually totally fine with that.

My main issue is that while I can find playlists via searching in the Plex app, I can’t save them to Plex. There is already an area inside Plex dedicated to music playlists, why not include the ability to save these playlists to Plex in the same way we can save an album?

With this implemented I could almost entirely use Plex without ever having to open the Tidal app. Suggestion two on my list above would be nice, but not totally necessary. I can make do with Plex playlists for ones that need to be customisable.

Your play count issues are another good reason why it’s a terrible idea to use two music systems.

I totally agree with you about the playlists. The fact that you CAN add tracks, albums and even whole artists but not playlists makes me think that the limitation is imposed by Tidal rather than it being a Plex coding issue. Tidal doesn’t want to share the My Mix lists etc, so perhaps it’s a blanket ‘no playlists’ rule? Just like the damned ‘no downloads’ rule…

The playlists show up in the Plex search results, so it’s not like Tidal is restricting access to them.

Saving the playlists as non-editable entities in Plex doesn’t seem like it would affect Tidal in any way.
