Tips and tricks

@KaraokeAmerica No, logging into plex.tv will not stream media through the internet if you are local to your server. It will however give you access to the latest web UI and all included features. There will be no difference in what happens once you start playing media.

Thanks. Unrelated to this thread I was actually thinking about this the other day and had considered asking. Thanks for the bit of insight!

On a related note, what would be the reason you would use the local server interface? I was thinking perhaps so you could use your setup without internet connectivity, but I found that it still asked for a login when trying to access that one.

Differences in the local web interface and plex.tv seems to be a fairly new thing with all of the changes/new features as of late. I would assume that the majority of these web changes will make their way to the local web server eventually. It seems as though the local web interface is becoming less useful if you’ve got the server linked to your plex account. The challenges with accessing Plex without internet access is becoming somewhat of a problem.

How you could do it and NOT have your server linked to your Plex account?

Not that I need to as central administration, to me, is one of the best things about Plex compared to other solutions, but it is the only way I know of to even use Plex…signing into your Plex account.

Settings -> Server -> General and then sign out. Thats the only way I’ve been able to use Plex when I don’t have an internet connection. Perhaps there is a better way…

I haven’t tried going backwards, but since every time I’ve wanted to access my library I’ve had to sign in then register that client on my Plex account via PIN, how would doing this allow you to even see your library?

If you log out of your plex account on the server there will be no authentication required to access your media locally. It will be automatically discovered and accessible by any plex client on your LAN.

Nice! I had no idea!

I see options to specify what channels you want available. Is there a way to rescan what channels are on the hdhomerun to select from? It appears to only be available during the initial setup.

If are running the DVR Beta 3 and accessing it from http://app.plex.tv/web and not localhost:32400/web you can now rescan the channels outside of the initial setup. Settings -> Server -> DVR

Perfect! Thanks

Couple of questions:

  1. Unable to Play: I am on the most current build. I am able to record but I have never been able to play the recording. Dont know why. Any thoughts? Here is some info from my recording - maybe somebody can spot something here! I have attached the XML file. I have also set the server to “Transcode”. I am running a Synology 1513+
  2. How do the recordings get deleted - if I “mark as watched” then does it “auto delete” ?

Thanks!

Thanks!

AFAIK, the DVR has no “delete” functionality. I have deleted the actual file via Windows Explorer only.

Yes it does. You can set recordings to delete after watch. Plex also has a global delete that can be enabled.

Cool! I had no idea! Where are those settings? I have never seen them in DVR settings.

I found a settings in general settings to allow admin to delete media but nothing specific to the DVR.

@DJ-BrianC thanks for your response. I do not see the global one… where can one find it? And how to get it to delete and not flood the NAS! I wish there was a "dont go beyond x% free capacity of the HD… its a good safety feature

If you look at server settings, library, there is a box for allow media deletion.

As far as recordings edit a show or movie that you have scheduled, click show advanced and scroll to bottom. There to will see the options to delete after watched.

Is there a roadmap published anywhere that indicates which features are being added, planned, etc. and when they may be released in future betas?

@tja824 not that I know of. The “known issues” thread is fairly out of date - at least I hope that isn’t all that will be fixed in beta4.

lol wheres beta 4… can’t wait

Hey guys, I originally had this all working great but I recently switched cable companies from CableOne to Mid Continent and when I run channel scan when setting up the DVR in plex it finds them all and I hit continue but the problem is it wont let me hit continue, like the button is broken and it does nothing at all. Note, if I then change the selection from Midcontinent Digital to just Midcontinent Basic, it allows me to hit “continue” button and starts working but I only get the first 62 channels and I am missing the other 200+. I originally thought it could be cause some of the movie channels had DRM but I went into the HDHR settings and disabled those ones, I am pretty sure it is some kind of Plex software issue within this beta, possibly based on my zipcode or cable company selected. Does anyone have any ideas how to get my other channels to work? They do work correctly if I skip plex and just use the HDHR Viewer app on my PC, so I know things are working right, just not getting them all through Plex. Thanks for the help.
