I have 4200+movies in my library. Today it only showed that I had 1900. After restarting and searching online, I initiated a library scan and now everything is showing up but the missing titles were added like they were new. So custom posters, tags and watch/unwatch state were wiped out. What would cause this?
It seems like Plex Media Server automatically performed a scan and the media files were unavailable for some reason. This can happen if, for example, your files are stored on a NAS and the connection is temporarily unavailable. Or if they’re stored on a removable drive and it becomes inaccessible for some reason (slow to come out of standby when a scan is requested?).
Until you can determine the cause of the files being unavailable during scan, you can mitigate the impact of it occurring by disabling the automatic emptying of trash. Uncheck:
Settings -> Library -> Empty trash automatically after every scan
Doing this will prevent PMS from deleting the item from the library if it becomes unavailable. So, when it is available again, all information is retained.
