Tons of music files suddenly no longer have a title

Once I refresh metadata, they go back to how they should be

This has happened once before, about 5 months ago. What is the cause of this?

I’ve been adding broken tracks to a smart playlist (filter: tracks without any letters in title, it’s hacky but works) and going through and refreshing each album individually. There are over 3,500 affected tracks. Is there a better way to refresh metadata only on broken tracks?

edit: as far as I know, all of the broken tracks are part of broken albums (ie. all tracks in the entire album have title missing). All broken albums show up when I filter by unmatched. However, not all unmatched albums are broken.

edit 2: refreshing metadata on all unmatched albums went much faster than usual and solved the problem. Hopefully this doesn’t happen again.

This is my problem too, but with each File scan, the data is lost…again. It happens only with unmatched albums under the matched artist “Various Artists”. I am going to try to “lock” the metadata and rescan.
