Tracking PMP functionality with Apollo Lake and Kaby Lake NUCs

Also, when I uncheck those as supported, it transcode the Audio to Stereo, that can’t be the chip.
I will give that a deeper look with and without the Club 3D adapter.

“Club 3D adapter”? What is that?
A DisplayPort to HDMI adapter.

Cool, but disappointing. I thought it was some “club” (PlexPass or something) adapter for Plex that allowed it to play real, full-resolution 3D like Kodi…

Still searching for that capability…

It is being used by early adopters of the Intel Apollo Lake and Baby Lake NUCs to bypass issues with the native HDMI port.

Clarify for me here. You are testing with embedded PMP using 1.2.3.622 and you get HD audio passthrough using the Club 3D adapter?
I have narrowed the problem down to the Audio.

IF i have DTS-HD MA or Dolby TrueHD “selected as playable formats” and the file has one of those types of tracks. it stutters badly. (See image 1 below)
I get no HD audio sound at all configured for passthrough using either the built-in HDMI 2.0 port or the Club 3D adapter. I do not experience any stuttering or frame drops with the video. Played Varsity Blues with out any issues with the video.

IF i select a AC3 or DTS track, it works.
Confirmed same. Everything plays normal.
IF i have DTS-HD MA or Dolby TrueHD “selected as NOT playable formats” and i have selected on of those files to play. it transcoded to PCM Stereo (see image 2)
If I set Dolby TrueHD to decode I get sound but its not consistent. Sometimes it will output multichannel and sometimes output 2ch. Since I have unchecked DTS-HD Master Audio, the core is sent to my Denon and decoded. No video stutter or dropped frames.

hello testers and Dev’s.:

i’m confused … this days perhaps i’m gonna buy one of new NUC 7i3BNK using the HDMI2.0 output to a new receiver (pending to choose) with HDCP 2.2 and 4k capable passthrough.

_You’re doing test and i’m not sure for the OK or the KO of the passthroug HD audio. _

# Future schema:

  • i’m planning to use PMP in a Windows 10 normal installed on a Samsung 960 m.2 evo. With latest drivers for intel GPU
  • connected to a new receiver capable of DTS-HD-MA and Dolby TrueHD and the rest. HDCP 2.2 etc…
  • to a 4K TV HDCP 2.2 too with HDMI 2.0

# Present schema:

  • the same above gear, except the TV 4K **_now _**are outputting with opt.digital (advanced audio output PCM output) to a one Logitech Z906 **_NOT _**capable of DTS-HD-MA and HD audio. Only DTS and Dolby Digital (the lossy one).
  • i’m not sure the correct setting for PMP to passthrough the DTS and DD (and NOT the others) because my Logitech Z906 it’s not capable of decode. Work must be done in NUC-PMP

And for the other side: are this NUC capable of plays without dropped frames files with HEVC 4k 10 with DTS-HD-MA (in this case not doing passthrough) ??

thanks!

You really should let Intel mature this NUC before proceeding. It is not truly plug and play yet. Under Windows 10, it does most of what you want but still a bit quirky.

thanks for the response!..
i’m really tired of the battle with the NUC’s …

in the future i’ll think about new NUC
it’s a pity because it’s not a promised piece of gold-HTPC to use with PMP.
thinking in the nVidia Shield TV 2017 to buy right now

thanks again!

I agree with that (HOWEVER) i would not buy a lesser NUC either… you’re going to want those 4K capabilities at some point. SO, if it where my, I would either wait completely (6 months or so) or get the NUC7i3XXX with Windows 10. (although, the embedded version works ok if you are not using HD Audio

@wesman I have issues with the Club 3D adapter in Windows. Dropped frames and audio dropouts. The built-in HDMI port works fine. Testing 4K HDR HEVC and it seems to be able to decode and play those well. I am not having the reported 1080p24 HD audio malfunction as reported on nucblog. However, I am not using HDMI 2.0 AVR

Yes, Embedded PMP 1.2.3.622 with Club Adaptor, but the view is ridiculously choppy see here. but no dropped frames, and the movie advanced while in blackout

I mean the video stutters, not the audio… I get pretty much no audio, but if you listen to it long enough, you’ll hear sound meant for background speakers.

Thanks we are on the same page now. Its been a busy week.

or get the NUC7i3XXX with Windows 10. (although, the embedded version works ok if you are not using HD Audio

that’s the point … i’m gonna use windows 10 for several reasons (other apps, casual office, networking etc…). i’m not gonna use embedded.
my last NUC 5i3 (i sold out) worked well for all files … all 0 dropped frames and DTS and Dolby Digital (the normal ones) with passthrough to my Logitech z906.
now i’m gonna buy (or think about) the new 7i3 and i expect minimum the same, but now i want to play 4k movies in 8 or 10 without dropped frames.

for my scenario is:

  • the new NUC 7i3bnk … with windows 10 … outputting with HDMI2.0 to my Hisense 4k 55’’ HDMI2.0 input 60Hz. capable.
  • the TV set with NO internal speakers and set output for digital optical output PCM to optical input for my Logitech z906.
  1. in this case…which options i need to check in PMP settings to passthrough **_ONLY _**DTS and Dolby Digital … leaving the NUC and PMP do the job for (a few DTS-HD-MA Dolby TrueHD movies) HD audio.
  2. wich setting needed to check for 4k files HEVC10…(i have some movies in 4k resolution with HEVC10…i know they’re a fake altough. Are Full BR remuxed and re-scaled to. UHD_4K_HDR encription for phisical BluRay 4k movies are not broken yet. AACCS2.0)

keep going…PMP i like best.

offtopic: what about new UI…the possiblilty for logo.png, banner.png, etc…and actor thumbs (like Plex for Kodi does) ???.

Yes, I applied the 1.61 firmware. I don’t really care about the Club3D adapter as its really just a stop gap solution and the built-in HDMI port works under Windows. It won’t help with Linux since its a driver issue in the kernel with the DP bus path.

True, but that’s the issue with us early adopters, bleeding edge and all that… Ultimately, it’s going to be a bang out system… Plus, as sick as I am… I like to work out bugs… mostly…

… leaving the NUC and PMP do the job for (a few DTS-HD-MA Dolby TrueHD movies) HD audio.
This will not work out the way you are thinking. The output from the HDMI of the NUC will be down mixed to PCM 2Ch Stereo for your TV–as this is most likely what will be reported as the supported audio layout from the HiSense. Further more even IF your TV reported it has more than 2Ch stereo support, HDCP for HDMI will kick in and will not allow bridging anything more than PCM 2Ch from the HDMI input to the optical SPDIF output of the TV.
  2. wich setting needed to check for 4k files HEVC10…(i have some movies in 4k resolution with HEVC10…i know they’re a fake altough. Are Full BR remuxed and re-scaled to. UHD_4K_HDR encription for phisical BluRay 4k movies are not broken yet. AACCS2.0)

No settings are required. Just do not try to setup custom high quality profiles in mpv.conf–it will drop frames if you do so.

That is what we are doing–sliding down the razor’s edge. It took quite a long time for them to get HD audio bitstreaming working for the Braswell NUCs in Windows. Lets hope the same is not true for these new NUCs with Linux. Intel is typically standoff-ish when it comes to Linux.

Apologies. I made a mistake you are using a 6th Gen NUC. I was tired and thought I saw 7th Gen. Please post logs and plexmediaplayer.conf files and I will take a look.

Still your statement is not entirely true.

Yes, part of the fix needs to be addressed by Intel (via the HDMI 2.0 output that uses that LSPCon chip) HOWEVER the problem still exist using the Club Adaptor that does not use that chip (So, not intel)

Also, Given that the OP is seeing exactly the same issue and same symptoms, on an unrelated box with a different chip, it appears much more likely that this is a Plex Issue.

@vlang is there anything I can provide to help track this down?

@wesman I retracted my statement to him and struck it out. His NUC is not the 7th gen. This has nothing to do with the LSPCon – hence the request for his logs and configs.

@wesman This is how I see the situation at the moment regarding the Apollo Lake and Kaby Lake NUCs:

Windows

  1. Windows has full driver support for the new hardware.
  2. HD Audio Bitstreaming fully functions when connected to HDMI 1.3/1.4/1.4a device regardless of the LSPCon FW update
  3. HD Audio Bitstreaming does not function when connected to HDMI2.0 device without the LSPCon FW update
  4. HD Audio Bitstreaming partially functions when connected to HDMI2.0 device with the LSPCon FW update.
  5. Refresh rate switching breaks the above scenario ^^
  6. The Club 3D Adapter drops frames and performance is erratic (could be a bad adapter)

Embedded

  1. HD Audio Bitstreaming does not function even if the FW Update has been applied
  2. Kernel driver support is missing and reported here
  3. The above ^^ has been an outstanding issue for almost a year with the Intel NUC6i7KYK–also only has HDMI2.0
  4. The issues above will need to be fully sorted out by Intel in order for this to fully function with Linux
  5. Bitstreaming of AC3 and Core DTS functions as expected
  6. Decoding of HD Audio Codecs by PMP to Multichannel LPCM yet to be determined reliable
  7. The Club 3D Adapter drops frames and performance is erratic (could be a bad adapter)
