Hi
I have this new NAS device,Asustor AS-5304T, (Celeron J4105, VGA intel UHD 600 ) but I am not very happy with the result.
According Plex NAS Compatibility sheet there should be no problem, but I have issues with playing 4k 264 HDR videos from my DJI camera.
Video is blurring, and buffering, also I dont understand why is video transcoded when TV can play this directly ( from USB device TV can play it smoothly),
Another topic is that according NAS perf stats, system is not overloaded, (just 20% CPU)so why is buffering ?)
In Plex Settiings is enabled > Use hardware-accelerated video encoding
FYI: I found another test 4k video in HEVC, and this was playing smoothly ( direct play)
Another topic : All my old movies ( SD MPEG4 codec )are also bluring and not smoothly,
Any idea ?
I would first check the quality settings on the TV client, should be original/max for local and remote.
Plex clients can only support the formats that the device manufacturer allow them to. These should be .mp4 files, the MOV container is more limited on the TV. If the TV is connected via ethernet, the average bit rate should be less than 100 Mbit and if wireless it would depend on the quality of the connection.
Hi, reg. your tip for waiting fix… there is mentioned ApoloLake processor, however I have GeminiLake processor, is it related also ?
Somebody in the tread adviced to disable HW decoding, and yes it fixed issues with blurring old SD MPEG movies,
But I would like to know if there is a chance that somebody will fix it on HW side and how long it can take ?
Because main reason why I bought this NAS device was for newer Gemini Processor and there are below features (according intel)
New Features: HDMI 2.0 support,
VP9 10-bit Profile2 hardware decoder
My question is if I can use benefits of this features in Plex and when ?
Because on other hand I am not very happy with the all software apps on Asustor and I am considering to switch to QNAP ( but HW downgrade then to ApoloLake J3455)
GeminiLake is an ApolloLake (if I remember it right) because they’re still on the same base foundation. (-7xxx and -8xxx in Intel Core terms)
It isn’t until the CoffeeLake family where things change (-9xxx in Intel Core terms).
There are some -8xxx CoffeeLake CPUs so be careful in which is which.
There was released ApoloLake, Then Kebylake and then GeminiLake
Kaby Lake (HD610+) New Features: Speed increases, support for 4K UHD “premium” (DRM encoded) streaming services, media engine with full hardware acceleration of 8- and 10-bit HEVC and VP9 decode[23][24]
The server doesn’t support video out so no dependency on the HDMI.
You can manually re-enable the HW transcoder by removing the iHD driver so that it falls back to the i965.
18.5 looks to be testing the new installer and is here now.
18.6 is rumored to revert back to the i965 till the iHD is worked out and probably released soon.
I have the same NAS as the author. I’ve just moved all my data from an old server, and am still using an nvidia Shield as Plex server. It work pretty well. I bought this NAS specifically as it should have the best Plex HW transcoding available. Whenever I enable HW acceleration, all videos that I try to play are choppy and very pixelated in big blocks. I’ve tried the official stable Plex version as well as the latest one in the Beta Channel. Same result. Directplay works fine. Is this because this CPU, Celeron J4105, is too new? I was planning to replace the nvidia shield with something that could handle 4k hdr transcoding in hardware properly.
