@Fireboltfury this should have the same AMD compatibility/requirements as the current public builds. We have tasking for better AMD support in the backlog but it has not been prioritized yet.
@dklein more like the current public transcoder is working only due to a bug which this transcoder fixed (and thus broke dovi fallback). I believe I have a solution which will be included in the next iteration of this forum preview.
Just to clarify, you can use Plex and this Preview on the X 5950X as a CPU and use a GPU with either NVenc or Quick Sync as your hardware transcoder as I am with my 9950X and RTX 5060.
@chris_decker08 It would be great to have better support for AMD APUs and GPUs since they are doing so well in the market right now - and looking better all the time.
I know they aren’t as efficient or feature packed as the alternatives, but I still do a lot of transcoding (not Plex) on my old AM4 APU and other than the files being a bit big, it does a great job.
** I know it’s not in your control and AMD has to do it’s part by prioritizing media engines again (Lord, I do miss ATI’s media engines!!) , but if ffmpeg has better native support for AMD in 6.x, it would be appreciated if those functions could be passed along – even if it’s still not supported by Plex.
@ChuckPa -Late reply. If you are testing on an i9-12900 CPU, you will not be reproducing the issue with artifacts. The i9-12900 has a UHD 770 iGPU. The issue is with Intel NUCs with the Intel Iris XE iGPU. I specifically use my 10th gen NUC because it has UHD iGPU and does not have the issues. 11th gen+ does.
Edit1- I see an earlier reply that you have aa 12th Gen NUC. You should be able to reproduce it there.
Edit2- I realize the original thread reported the issue on 12th/13th gen CPUs with the UHD 770 also (I had the hardware and was testing at the time) - however that was two years ago and I no longer have that hardware to test with and can’t confirm on my end. I can only confirm the current issues with the NUCs as I can freely move between 10th and 12th gen units to reproduce / fix the problem.
Anything that needs HW encoding in my case. Mostly noticeable in dark scenes. Samples provided before should suffice. @chrisallen has reproduced this already, so you guys should get in contact.
I am using I3-N305, the latest docker version of plex, and using the browser to play, iGPU transcoding, and when burning subtitles, artifacts will appear. After testing, any 1080P HEVC format movie that needs to burn subtitles will have artifacts, as long as the subtitles are not burned, there will be no artifacts, and this will not happen when playing 4K HDR movies. I tested the files in this post and artifacts also appeared @ ChuckPa Plex Media Server Logs_2025-07-22_15-48-53.zip (2.9 MB) artifacts.zip (559.1 KB)
@qingyuan looking at your logs this appears to be happening for image based subtitles (such as PGS), is it also happening for text based subtitles (such as SRT or ASS)? could the 4k HDR movies have a different type of subtitles? @zbe does this match your experience?
I updated the download links to a new build with the following changes:
Updated to the 1.42.0 baseline (currently in the beta channel)
fixed: On screen duration is updated during playback of certain files (PM-3653)
fixed: Live tv fails to transcode when transcoding to hevc (PM-3757)
fixed: framedrop bitstream filter not found (PM-3777)
fixed: DOVI profile 8 Tone mapping produces flashes of color on MACOS (PM-3816)
potentially fixed: Live tv fails to transcode when the stream includes ASTC A53 CC subtitles (PM-3775)
@pl_5309 and @tree2369 I don’t have any live tv channels which have the subtitle streams you were having issues with, would you mind checking if this build resolves your issues?
