Transcoding - Advanced Limitations

Hi all, I’m trying to figure out if I can limit remote streaming/transcoding from a server based on more advanced parameters. Specifically, if a file is 4K (or a certain bitrate/higher), DON’T allow somebody to stream it with transcode - only allow original quality, IF there is another stream/transcode going on already on the server (local or remote, doesn’t matter).

The intent is to provide some 4K transcode limitations since the the Shield Pro struggles to do a 4K transcode and anything else at the same time - but it can handle ONE at a time without causing buffering/stuttering on the other thing streaming.

Some people are using Tautulli and custom scripts to kill transcodes.

Tautulli does not run on the Shield. You will need a separate system if you need it to run 7x24. See Installation Instructions for a list of supported systems.

See the “Kill Streams” script:

ideally you should avoid transcoding 4k completely by putting them in a separately library and not using 4k content on anything that doesn’t direct play 4k.

see also @ Plex, 4k, transcoding, and you

Never considered that… but what about when I want to make a collection with movies from both libraries, that will work ok? Personally I don’t like the idea of having “movies” and “movies 4k” on the side either, but if it’s the only way…

Can I run this program on my QNAP while the server is on the Shield?

yes you can have collections from multiple libraries.

as long as the collection is the same name in each library.

for example, my star wars collection spans 3 different movie libraries (main/4k/3d), artists, music, and tv shows.

Yes that should work, tautulli runs as a docker container, also on QNAP.

Any idea on the “script folder” path that I can use on qnap by chance? I’ll try posting in their forum thread too.

As @Coxeroni mentions, it should work.

I run Tautulli as a docker container on my DS918+. It monitors PMS running on the same DS918+ and a separate PMS on Windows 10.

Caveat: I do not run PMS on my Shield or use the Tautulli custom scripts, so cannot say for certain it will do what you need.
