Transcoding and Subtitles

When playing a particular video file with subtitles turned on, when viewing on my Sony Android TV the PMS transcodes while viewing. When playing the same video file, also with subtitles turned on, when viewing on my Apple TV 4K, the PMS does not transcode the file while viewing.

Neither platform transcodes the file when the subtitles are turned off.

I am just wanting to understand what is happening in both platforms and why Apple TV 4K seems to process viewing with less overhead in general.

Is the audio also transcoding?

With Android TV devices, if you enable SRT subtitles and the audio is transcoding, then the video will also transcode. Plex does this to keep the video, audio, & subtitles in sync with each other.

Not sure if it also happens with PGS & VOBSUB subtitles.
