Unnecessary 4K transcoding in webOS Plex app

Server Version#: 1.18.3.2156
Player Version#: webOS Plex App

I’m using the latest version of Plex app on webOS, and it for some UHD content it becomes unplayable due to endless buffering, which is caused by transcoding that my HTPC is unable to handle.

However, if I copy the same content to a pendrive and play it from the TV instead of the Plex app, video, audio and subtitles play without any issue, meaning the TV is capable of handling those codecs.

Why is Plex forcing transcoding (and thus being useless for 4K) when direct play is indeed supported???

all your answers @ Plex, 4k, transcoding, and you

With the Plex app on LG TVs:

  • Enabling image based subtitles - PGS & VOBSUB - forces a video transcode.
  • If the audio is transcoding, enabling SRT subtitles forces a video transcode.

With the LG Plex app, TrueHD audio transcodes to AAC. Blu-ray movies with TrueHD audio also have an AC3 track. If available in your copy of the movie, select the AC3 audio to avoid transcoding.

See this post for additional info regarding audio formats and the Plex LG app.

Thanks for the information. PGS subtitles were the issue. Disabling them stopped the forced video transcoding

Why does enabling SRT cause video transcoding.

Is that a bug?

if the audio is transcoding (ie not compatible), and subtitles are enabled, then plex will transcode the video.

this is not a bug, it is intentionally to keep the video, audio, and subtitles all in sync.
