When playing any content with audio output to Homepods (Minis in my case), the video and audio both transcode. The content does direct play with audio direct from the iPad however.
(Same thing with my iPhone)
I can confirm this happens on tvOS.
I can confirm this as well, but in tvOS 2025.15.0 it doesn’t seem to be able to download logs. I have a stereo set of Homepod mini’s I can test with.
So I remembered something ChuckPa had said about disabling Enable HEVC Optimization (experimental) for my gemini lake gpu. I disabled it and tried again and it stopped transcoding. I re-enabled it and it still no longer transcodes. I watched the same episode as before. 8.45 on the left, 2025.15.0 on the right.
I don’t seem to have that setting (or can’t find it?)
I don’t have that option either. thats dependent on what intel chip you have.

That option only shows up if you have the Enable HEVC video Encoding (experimental) option enabled. I enabled that and tested with the other option enabled and disabled and it still didn’t seem to make difference for me either way. Note that I was testing with an IPad though, not Apple TV (I’ve got that as well but not using HomePods with it).
I believe this is a client side issue and it is on my radar to fix. TY reporting this and following up

I found today that it appears to only be HEVC/265 videos. h264 plays fine to my HomePods without transcoding (although maybe you already knew this).
Not in my case. I have a 480p h264 file with stereo audio. That direct Plays in the old app and infuse, but direct streams in the new app. No transcoding this time. But yes when I play HEVC files on the new app, it transcodes the video and direct streams the audio when they play just fine in the old app and infuse (Apple TV with HomePods).

Just throwing my name on here as another user that is experiencing this issue.
Unfortunately, we have not had any updates on this. It has forced me to use either the original Plex tvOS app for now or infuse.
