Transcoding: I5-10400 QSV vs RX 6400

I’m running Plex Media Server on Ubuntu.

Hardware: intel i5-10400, QuickSync Video
And: dedicated GPU, AMD RX 6400

Two questions regarding transcoding:

  1. When HW transcoder selection is in “auto” mode, how do I know which one Plex is choosing to use for HW transcoding? (I know I can tell Plex to use one or the other. I also have the Plex Dash app, so I know HW transcoding is working, but… which device is being used?)

  2. Which HW is better for transcoding? (So I know which one to keep drivers updated for)

You want the Intel graphics.

AMD graphics cannot be used for transcoding and tonemapping HDR media.

To add for FordGuy,

  1. Nvidia GPUs are the best. Most of us use P2000/P2200 or better for UHD but some others will work.
    – You want a card which is supported by Nvidia drivers for the codecs you’ll need.
(search ‘Nvidia encode decode matrix’ in Google)

  2. Intel QSV in the CPU is also supported

  3. Rumor has it that Intel ARC is also now supported (should be due the Intel Media Driver if the Intel GPU drivers are installed) but I cannot confirm this.

  4. AMD GPU cards are only SDR capable at this time. (we only recently added AMD support)
