Trying to figure out if there is a setting I need to change on my device. I have my server on a WDPR2100. Hardware transcoding is checked and I believe automatic on this device.
When I play a video on a computer whether mac or PC it goes into hardware transcoding. Even on 480p movies and live tv.
When I play the same videos on my apple tv, iphone or ipad it is direct play or direct stream.
Is this performing correctly or do I need to change a setting?
Would really need more information. How is the show encoded? When you refer to on Mac or PC what are you using to play the show? Web? Plex Media Player? Plex for Mac or Plex for Windows?
What is the Now Playing showing that is being transcoded? Below is a screenshot of the same show being played, one from Web Browser which is transcoding the HEVC video, the other from Plex for Windows app which is able to Direct Play the HEVC video.
Web browsers will more than likely require a transcode based on the codecs in use in the show. If 1080p h264 video you would probably be seeing Direct Play or Direct Stream. If a DVR recording with MPEG2 video you will require a transcode. Below is another image of a web browser versus the Plex for Windows app playing a Live TV session showing the MPEG2 video requiring a transcode for the web browser.
Generally speaking, you will have much better success with Direct Play or Direct Stream if you use the Plex for Windows, Plex for Mac, or Plex Media Player when you are on your Mac or PC.
I think that kinda answers it for me. The videos in question were showing as MPEG2VIDEO
I appreciate the help…now I just need to figure out why when I watch live tv the dashboard shows the wrong thing playing lol.
