Transcoding options when using subtittles

Transcoding options when using subtittles to not use hardware acceleation for example, because software transcoding is faster then hardware encoding least on the ds920+

with subtittles it buffers every 3 seconds while without it quickly buffers 1 minute video no problem.

I’m trying to wrap my head around this request… not fully sure I get your point.
Keep in mind that burning subtitles into the video is done entirely by the CPU, not via hardware acceleration. This will easily be beyond the capabilities of the CPU built into the DS920+ (see NAS Compatibility list entry for this model)

Its encoding way way slower with hardware accelerated encoding enabled it instantly becomes faster just turning of hardware encoding bassicly
If i have subs enabled and stream to my chromecast it bassicly slows down to buffer every few seconds my only option is to turn off hardware transcoding cos that is faster then leaving it on

Once again i am second grade citizen because they do not understand the issue even tho i explained hardware transcoding is slow when baking in subtittles, it bassicly needs 30 seconds to buffer 5 seconds of video then pauses for 30 seconds again that is how slow it is with hardware accceleration enabled + subtittles
I am seriously starting to regret buying plex pass lifetime right now…

you can try using the VaapiDriver=“i965” driver in the preferences.xml on the DS920+. I have the same NAS and when watching live TV with closed captioning it didn’t work, 0.8x speed. after adding the older driver to the preferences.xml the speed us usually 1.5 or so which allows closed captioning to work on this specific device for me.

FYI I use the HDHOMERUN dual tuner device and this was the only way I could watch liveTV with closed captioning. Don’t know how it will affect other types of subtitles… but worth a shot.

I dont use the app i use linuxserver.io package in docker container with --device=/dev/dri:/dev/dri and its clearly not working as soon i turn of subtitles its super fast, when i turn it on 30 seconds waiting to buffer 5 seconds of video only to pause instantly again for 30 seconds, i turn hardware acceleration off it instantly buffers.

I use video station app from synology it uses lowe resources instantly buffers easy skip ahead subtittle support on chromecast, no issues whatsoever except chromecast shows up 2 times i need to restart my phone just to cast again so i bought plex, but now i bought plex pass and i regret it and the more people try to help me the more frustated i become, there no solution i am a second grade citizen if been clearly ripped off

I am bassicly using this

I cant use the normal app it does not allow me to setup libaries on dsm 7

Why even force functionality to work that does not work under fixed circumstances saying it just works fine is just a lie

Already tryit this morning it does not work
Imgur
it just give an error until i remove it like if said already i am using docker and ran it with the driver for intel quicksync but it is clearly working, and its really fast but ultra super duper slow when there subtittles needed which appearntly plex cannot handle to cast towards chromecast and its starting to piss me off that i am talking in circles and everyone is just straight out ignoring me as if i am talking to a wall

Tryit again i copy pasted it from different guide and replaced it with proper " " and it worked this time appearntly the original guide i found early today has wrong commas being used

My suggestion is still valid tho kind of if there was an option to do this inside interface instead that be really usefull, or perhaps it could be thru bash inside container or while deploying the doicker container like a envoriment variable that sets a different driver

Yeah Plex does require tinkering to make it work the way you want, and this seem’s unique to the DS920+ and the J4125 CPU. This is the older driver while the iHD driver is newer it seems to have issues with sub’s and the workaround has worked for me, so I thought I’d share.

I have tried docker and the native app, both seem to perform almost the same (I actually find the docker all over the board CPU wise) so I stick with the native app (less tinkering these days) a few other containers in docker xteve, Bitwarden, tautillui, adguard etc. Also custom post processing to convert TP to .mp4 using the hardware encoder, since the DVR does not use hardware transcoding on it’s own.

I still need to figure it all out but i wish i could make it work over dlna on my sony 46hx750 tv it just needs a mp4 stream i think and baked in subs, if had issues with subs as well after i aplied the tweak, but main content i watch is almost as fast maybe little slower then pure cpu transcoding, however its less impactfull on cpu with hardware transcoding, some content actually plays that had issues before i think, i eventually just build new system purely as nas device probably with proxmox + freenas and setup everything on that, probably gonna use old hardware of mine and get a gpu for it for transcoding, but that will take a while probably doing that next year, probably should’ve done instead of buying ds920+ 1 month ago.
