cant find button hardware acceleration

Hello,
I am new here so i hope i am posting this in the right catagory.
I am having trouble transcoding 1080p movies with SRT subtitles to my ps3 app. Without srt subtitles it works most of the time. but when i turn them on it will not work. I think it is because my cpu of my nass (918+) is very busy. its arount 97% all the time due to transcoding. So i am hoping to find a solution for that. Maybe the hardware accelaration can help. I already have a plex pass because i think that is required. But i still cant find the button in the menu from the transcoder. how can i make hw transcoding visible and can i use it?

You can enable hw transcoding in Settings->Server->Transcoder->Use hardware acceleration when available
The question remains if your NAS supports it. Check this article.

I know the setting must be on the place you describe. I only cant find the button. It is not available.
my nas (918+) is using the Intel Celeron J3455 processor. This one has Intel Quick Sync capability’s.
So i would expect the hardware accelaration to be present. But still cant find it.

Have you clicked the “Show Advanced” button on the top right?

Also, which server version are you running?

yes i have clicked the advanced box.
the only things i see is background transcoding (from fast to slow)
and the number of transcodes at the same time.
I am using the latest version (Version 1.10.1.4602)

Two things:

  • If you can’t see hardware acceleration as an option, then it most likely means your machine isn’t approved (by plex) for it.
  • Subtitles choking up your playback/transcoding is a majorly known issue and Plex really really stinks at it. Try using the SubZero channel (it’s in, um, channels) and using it to download subs that plex plays back without much effort. A quick search on the forums should point you in the right direction.

Can anyone tell me if Plex in nearby future maybe the synology 918+ also approves for using Hardware acceleration?
Because my understanding is that the 916+ already has the approval?

It is likely you currently have the 32bit plex server installed. This version doesn’t support hardware transcoding.
You need to download the 64bit synology package from plex.tv download section and then install that manually through package Centre.

Thanks Dazstrad, that was the trick. I didnt even know there was a 32 and 64 bit version.

I have same issue and my pc specs

i7 8700k
GTX 1080 Ti

and the iGpu enabled with drivers installed etc… its working
and the discrete gpu latest drivers

so you are saying plex doesn’t support either of my gpu’s ?
so can you find a white list of supported hardware I am trying to build a Nas/server that is able to stream 4k/4k HDR to multiple users without breaking into a bank.

and yes i tried show advanced settings and did search for good time here and there in forums +youtube etc…
its not the there simple. so its not showing because I don’t have the premium plex? or its not compatible with my hardware ?

about 32 bit. i am on Windows 10 .

and in the download menu there is only 1 version to download for windows

Hardware transcoding is a Plex pass feature. You don’t seem to have one on your account.
Plex server for Windows is only available in 32bit.

I’m trying to use hardware acceleration on my Intel NUC with J3455 - it should be possible if I’m not misinformed. However, I did notice in several threads that a 64-bit version is needed for hardware transcoding. All these mentions were for various Synology NAS models, but I wonder … is the same true for Plex Server on Windows environment? Does it mean that hardware transcoding isn’t possible with Plex Server on Windows 10?

Hm. Doesn’t this mean PGS subtitles should be hardware transcoded considering I ticked the “Use hardware acceleration when available” option in Settings/Transcoder? Something clearly isn’t working OK because if PGS subtitles are enabled I see “buffering” every few seconds (completely useless, of course).
Any suggestions how to pinpoint the cause of the problem?

Hardware Transcoding doesn’t burn in subtitles. That is a separate process and cannot be accelerated with specialised hardware in the CPU/GPU.

You best bet is to use client hardware which can play PGS/VOBSUB subtitles natively
or
pre-transcode your videos and burn those subtitles in during the process
or
convert those PGS/VOBSUB subtitles to SRT. SRT subtitles are supported by much more different Plex clients.

Oh, thanks for clarification.

Does “client hardware” mean i7+ CPU (=a much more powerful PC) or are there specialised devices that can handle this? Like Nvidia Shield (although googling reveals that this is a problem on Shield as well).

I have this one myself and it can play most files with PGS/VOBSUB subtitles just fine. Only the most bandwidth-intense UHD remuxes may have issues.

If you have PC hardware (it doesn’t have to be a very powerful one, it just needs to be fast enough to play all your files with a regular open-source based player software like MPC-BE), you can install Plex Media Player on it and can Direct Play virtually everything with it.
(Provided you have enough network bandwidth. For remote connections, transcoding may be necessary still, if the bandwidth needs to be reduced.)

I also hear that the new experimental player engine on the Apple TV can play those subtitle formats Early access for Plex Pass users to new Apple TV & iOS Video Player
