Hello everyone,
With Plex server installed on a NAS (Synology for example) and Xbox 360/Xbox one as the player.
Which one would do the transcoding, the NAS or the Xbox ?
In other words : Do I need an expensive NAS to transcode before sending the media (movies) to the Xbox ? Or a cheap NAS like a DS115 would do the job as the Xbox would do the transcoding…
Thank you very much in advance for your help
ther server always does the transcoding. it converts the file to a format the player can play or converts based on bandwidth/quality settings.
if things are already in a format the xbox app can play and/or the quality of a compatible file set to play the original file quality then the server will not transcode.

Thank you,
Why the compatibility list from :

Is different from :

Because there are two different players, Xbox one multimedia player and Plex ?
Plex on Xbox one can play avi format right ?
Device manufacturers sometime limit what third party apps can utilize. sometimes what is possible over local playback different than what is possible over Http Live Streaming (HLS).
For a while third party apps were not allowed to have mkv support on the Xbox One until Microsoft allowed it.

No. as the article says it can play mp4 and mk4 with the codecs mentioned. an avi file would need to get remuxed ( direct streamed, which still requires the transcoder ) if the codecs inside are compatible. if codecs not compatible then it would need a full transcode
What a full and precise answer :). Thank you again !
