Transcoding problem

Hey guys,
So my configuration is this:
Plex Server Version#: 1.18.2.20.58 on a Mac Mini 2014
Media Content on a Synology NAS Synology 1815+

In my living room, I have an Apple TV 4K and a Samsung 4K.
All of this is using an ethernet network. In this room, my experience is great with both 1080p or 2K content.

However, in my bedroom I have a FireTV Stick 4K but and “old” Panasonic HD TV. Here the experience with 4K movies is really bad. I assume that there is a transcoding problem at some point but I don’t know where.

So, I’m not really sure what to do.
On plex server configuration, transcoder I have Make my CPU hurt.
Transcoder default throttle buffer is 60
Background transcoding x264 preset is Medium
Use hardware acceleration when available is on.

Of course, a simple solution would be to have both 4K and 1080p versions on the server, but this will be a waste of space.
Also, I was thinking of getting buying the fire tv stick ethernet adapter, but I’m not really sure if that’s the problem.

Anyway, thank you in advance and happy thanksgiving.

Your choices:

Keep 1080p versions
New 4K tv
New server that is 4K HEVC transcoder capable

So getting a new TV is the only solution?

Why is the 4K video needing to transcode?

I have my Fire Stick 4K connected to a PC monitor (Samsung 24", 1920x1200) and I can direct-play 4K movies on the Fire Stick still.
I then took another Fire Stick 4K and connected it another TV (Sekei 28", 720p display but can accept 1080p input) and did the same thing. 4K/HDR movie is direct playing, and it’s not washed out color/contrast on it like you get with transcoded video (it’s not HDR of course, I’m just saying it’s perfectly watchable – unlike the bland transcoded video Plex would send).

I don’t know if transcoding was the issue

Since you’re talking in past-tense now, are you saying the issue is gone?
Re-reading your original post, you haven’t even defined what the problem is.

“The experience is really bad” is just a vague subjective statement. What is actually happening?

If you’re bringing up your transcoding settings, anyone viewing this thread is going to assume your program is transcoding, but you haven’t even figured out if the content is transcoding. (!) The first thing you should do is go into your settings on the Fire Stick to Video > Display Information and turn it ON, so you can figure out how things are playing back. Then you should also figure out if this is an issue on multiple programs, or just one, and get the media info for it off the Plex web interface.
