Say under “Settings-Remote Access” I currently use a “Limit remote stream bitrate” to 3Mbps (720p) but now I am getting fiber internet installed and change that to “10 Mbps” since I am going from 20 to 1000 Mbps upload and no longer have that bottleneck.
Does that make transcoding work any harder than it normally would?? My server could handle 10 people no problem - will the server use more resources now that I set that higher, or is bandwidth and transcoding not related like that?
Also, if I set it to “Original quality” will transcoding not have to happen at all? I am pretty good with Plex but transcoding is the one thing that has always confused me. Thanks in advance!

Yes. But only somewhat. It is less than proportional in most circumstances.

It will not happen provided PMS thinks the client can handle the original data and the total limit is not exceeded. Be aware PMS uses datarates for the calculation which are larger than the average numbers you see under file info.
So the smartest route would be “Original quality” if I only have about 10 users, almost all my movies are 720p only (but will get 1080p going forward), and bandwidth is now an awesome 1,000 Mbps and no longer a limitation?
Yes.
But a side remark. “720p” does not say anything about the bit rate. I can get you a “720p” video with a datarate of 100 kb/s and one with 20 Mb/s. The first will look horrible and the second is an overkill in data provided.
And whether you will actually have a bandwidth of 1 Gb/s available will have to be seen. Not everything which is marketed as 1Gb/s lives up to that promise at every time of the day.
I guess I need to learn more about bitrates and how to tell how much is being used!
Thanks so much for your help - it is really appreciated. One last question - If I set remote limit to “original quality” on my end but the end users don’t change it off “3Mbps” setting I had them enter, will it use my “original” setting or their lower setting? Many thanks!
I guess it will use the lower setting. If that would not be the case, they would be able to override your present 3 Mb/s setting by setting themselves a bigger limit, which would defeat the purpose.
Ahh, gotcha. I assumed if they went higher it would deny it due to my setting, but if I said higher than what they had, it would allow more for them. Thanks a lot for your help eckarth. Didn’t have to take the time to help but you did, and I appreciate it.
