Been using plex for a very long time and moved from device to device to support it. I’m wondering why does plex now transcode videos and I noticed it started doing it right when plex left plex pass mode. It ran perfect before! Now it transcodes and also there’s s grey line at top and bottom of screen making dark screens extremely annoying. If plex wants money then I would gladly pay for the app as it ran much better before.
Nothing changes in the MDE on the Xbox One if your connecting to a Plex Pass server or a non-Plex Pass server. The app is what control’s whether or not it can direct play your video and there hasn’t been any recent changes to the playback profiles. (The most recent change was removing direct playback of h264 4k content as the Xbox decoder was having issues, HEVC 4k was fine, but h264 caused issues)
With that being said we can’t actually help you figure out why the Xbox is requesting a transcoded stream without seeing your logs or knowing the media information for the file you’re trying to playback.
The Xbox One’s do have a pretty decent number of codec support so the most common reasons for a transcode would be: Bit rate limit is set, HD Audio, DTS Audio, or subtitles enabled. Something that you can look at to see if they might the cause.
Thanks for the reply. Nothing changed on my part and I always played 1080p DTS audio which played perfectly fine before without transcoding and having these grey lines bordering the video. It honestly happend right it got out of plex pass mode and I stopped being a plex pass subscriber.
Very weird
We would need to see your logs then to see what exactly is happening.
The Xbox One has never been able to play DTS audio as Microsoft has not released a DTS decoder for either 3rd party apps or their own built in media player. So at a minimum those files will always show transcoding for the audio itself. To figure out why the video would be transcoding is why we would need to see the logs.
