I recently got the Plex lifetime subscription to finally move away from Itunes (Not Apple music)
I have migrated all my files over to plex. However, I can’t get any of the ratings, number of plays and playlist to migrate over.
There is an option within plugins to tranfer from itunes, but it does nothing. It doesn’t throw up any errors or provide any notifications. Once the files are imported, there is option to reimport the xml so i am at loss of what to do next.
I have gone through several posts (nothing recent), and none of the suggestions works.
Sometime since the “iTunes” app evolved into the “Music” app, the iTunesMusicLibrary.xml file became obsolete.
That’s the file that Plex is using to load Playlists from, at the direction of the path specified in the Plex iTunes plug-in.
I just upgraded computers and am now running Mac OS Ventura. That transition between operating systems appears to be the last time the iTunesMusicLibrary.xml file was created/modified. All attempts to import Playlists from iTunes thru Plex were using that “old” file.
I “exported” a new music library file thru the Music (formerly iTunes) app and saved it on my Desktop. I renamed the OLD iTunesMusicLibrary.xml file and put the newly exported xml file into the same directory as the OLD xml file, making sure to give it its old name.
Plex imported my Playlists semi-successfully, in that new playlists were imported. BUT…
SMART playlists were ignored and the import function fails frequently, giving a cryptic “SOMETHING WENT WRONG” error message, even tho Playlists DID eventually show up.
Overall, it’s a pretty poor excuse for music library access and could really use some improvement.
I took a similar but more complicated method, but it ended up being a waste of time as I came to the realisation: smart playlists don’t work
I used stars in Itunes, so I finally transferred the tracks (saved smart playlist to Manual playlist) to plex. I then went through each track in Plex and assigned the correct ratings. It was painful.
Regarding ITunes.xml and its deprecation, it’s frustrating that Plex continues to advertise it when it doesn’t work. I lost a good week of my life trying to figure it out before finally giving up. Infuriating
