Music Library Updates

So my iTunes (Music) Playlists “magically” made it into my Plex library - PLEASED AS PUNCH!!! But… I’ve since added a new playlist into iTunes (Music). So when/how will it get to Plex?

Importing your iTunes playlists into Plex is just that, import. It does not sync up with iTunes so changes you make in iTunes do not reflect back in your Plex server. Same if you make changes to the playlist in Plex, it does not go back to iTunes.

Please let me know is there’s a fix in the works for the “Import from iTunes” playlist function.

I think under Mac OS Ventura, the iTunesMusicLibrary.xml file is no longer used.

Exporting the library to a new .xml file and then attempting to import playlists to Plex, frequently results in “Something Went Wrong” error messages and also ignores Smart Playlists.

Are you referring to syncing up with iTunes? If so, that is likely never going to happen. There is nothing in iTunes that would allow Plex to know something has changed or to allow Plex to send info back to iTunes if things change on your PMS. Plex would need to constantly scan the xml file and compare them with what’s already on your server.

Correct. The iTunes app no longer uses this as their main source of data, but there is an option to continue generating this file. I believe this is different from exporting to an XML which is a 1 time thing. I don’t know if there is a way to read the new format that’s used, but there aren’t any plans to look into that since the old XML method can still be used and should still work.

Would need to see your server log and the XML to see what’s going on. It’s likely some xml elements have changed in iTunes and we may not be parsing them correctly anymore.

Smart Playlists can be imported, but they need to be recreatable in PMS. Check the rule you used. 1 common issue is track genres. Plex does not use this so any rules based on this cannot be imported.

That’s OK. I’d be happy with a manual export from Music (formerly iTunes) that I could have Plex grab once a week or so.

Can you point me to the option you’re referring to? Can’t see anything like that in Music (formerly iTunes) settings.
