Hello, I installed an internal hard drive with more capacity just to handle my ever-growing Plex database. Is there a proven and safe way to do this?
Do you want to transfer the Database? Or your files? Those are 2 different things…
If you want to transfer your files to the larger drive follow these steps:
Copy Hard Drive A to New Hard Drive B
Once the copy is complete, shut down Plex
Change the Drive Letter of Hard Drive A to something else
Change the Drive Letter of Hard Drive B to what Hard Drive A used to be
Start Plex.
If you want to transfer the Database, then you need to follow this:
Just my database.
Then use the forum post I linked…
Thanks for your help, it didn’t work, I’m sure I did something wrong. I copied AppData\Local\Plex Media Server to the new hard drive, in my case hard drive letter L. I clicked on the new hard drive and pasted it right there. should I go to users, etc? I went to Plex/general and changed the path name and rebboted, but it didn’t work. I put the old path back and it is working, so the way I linked it is wrong
So, you created L:\plexdata
Copied the “Plex Media Server” Folder into there
And then you pointed Plex at L:\plexdata in the settings>server>general> clicked “Show Advanced” and pasted into ther field that says “The Path where local application data is stored”?
I tried again and now when I reboot the computer I get "Plex madia server was not able to open the media database, and I can’t go any further than that. I am not able to even open the plex server at this point.
I got the Plex server to work again. where do i specifically paste the copied data folder, just anywhere on the new hard drive, or does it need to go in a specific location?
Create a folder called “Plexdata” on the new Hard drive. And paste the folder “Plex Media Server” from C:\Users<username>\AppData\Local\ into that “Plexdata” folder, so it looks like this:
L:\Plexdata\Plex Media Server\
Then in Plex, go to settings>server>general> click “Show Advanced” and paste L:\Plexdata into the field that says “The Path where local application data is stored”
Doing it right now, I will let you know how it goes.
Thank you for your patience and your help my friend, success at last.
No worries, glad you got it working
Hi Rick here. I added a second drive to my Plex app. After some poking around, I got the Plex app on my controlling W7 laptop to finally recognize this second drive (for Movies). However, I cannot get the Plex app on my Roku (connected to my TV) to also see the new drive. I’ve tried everything I can think of. Any help in that arena would be greatly appreciated.
Txs - Rick
