I’ve been using Plex for years and just tried to follow the various steps to move from Windows to a Nvidia Shield. It wasn’t as simple as I thought and I can’t see to get everything working as expected. I see the com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb folder in Android/ data, but I also have a Plex Media Server folder in the main sdcard folder (added the USB drive as internal storage). Which folder should all of my recordings go into? Does it matter?
More importantly, my initial testing for recording items off my HDHomeRun is giving me all sorts of errors. Originally, the errors were “The destination library or location doesn’t exist”, but then I realized all of my recordings were set to record to the windows share. After switching to the Nvidia folders, I now get “An error occurred while postprocessing the recording”. I get this error immediately whenever something is attempted to be recorded.
Where did you get these instructions. Plex does not have any official for moving from one OS to another. There are some significant difference between OS’s so moving form one to another is definitely not simple. Moving the DVR adds an extra complication. Probably would be easier to remove the DVR from the Windows setup first, then move the data, then re-add the DVR.
There were a number of different threads from these forums, as well as various others like on Reddit. At the moment I can see my settings from the Windows machine transferred over to the Shield (so I can see my preferences/ recordings preferences and even Library all transferred). I even have my Library folder on the 4GB drive I have attached (listed in shield as internal storage and shows up as an SD Card). I have access to the Card and can see the com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb folder in Android/ data.
My confusion is that there is also a “Plex Media Server” folder that has DB Backup and logs folder. I don’t know which folder my library should go into the Plex Media Server folder or the com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb folder in Android/ data.
When enabling the DVR, where would these recordings go to on the Shield? As well as where should the Transcoder Temp files go?
I suspect my errors have to do with permissions/ location of the Transcoder Temp files.
Either way, I’m not opposed to starting over. I can remove/ re-install Plex from the Shield. And before I re-enable the DVR, confirm that Plex Server is running correctly. I’m still just looking to know where the location for my Library and Transcoder files should be.
I don’t know what you saw, but moving from Windows to Android is complicated because Windows uses the registry while Android does not. So your statement above is only half right. These settings from the Windows registry do not get carried over. Your DVR setting are stored in a database, so that did get carried over.
2 - This is the issue when changing OS’s. DVR stores the files to the library location you originally had. How paths are mounted in Windows is different from Android, so these paths will all fail. You will need to edit each library you have and add the correct Android path. Then after PMS finished scanning, you need to remove the old Windows path that was there.
The transcoder temp folder is controlled from Web just like in Windows, but you will need to update the path to fit Android.
This looks promising. So on Windows I had a single folder where I stored all of my movies/ TV shows. I then edited the libraries in PMS to search for the items/ specific sub-folders. Sounds like I can keep it that way, or split it up to the default Android folders.
I noticed this and manually changed my library paths to the Android ones. I also started changing the paths on the DVR shows themselves in the Guide/ Scheduler. That is when I was getting the errors and just couldn’t get past the last error: “An error occurred while postprocessing the recording”. To test this, I edited a show’s path, then went into the guide to try to actually record it. The error would be almost immediate.
I’ll give it a shot once more by removing DVR from the Shield. Move my libraries to the default Android folders, then reboot/ run a scan. If my recorded shows are still there, I will attempt to edit them or re-create them after re-adding the DVR service and confirming that I can record any show from the guide.
Looks like I’m all set. I don’t think that I needed to move my videos into the default folders, but no issues there. Removing the DVR, rebooting and re-adding seems to have resolved the DVR errors I was getting. Now all of my recordings, including the temp Transcoder session files are being added into the default TV Shows folder.
