I have been running PMS on a Synology NAS for a long time but due to the transcoding limitations of the NAS, and the fact that the Nvidia shield has hardware transcoding support I want to move my PMS to the shield (the actual video files will still be hosted on the NAS).
The key thing is, if I setup a whole new server it would seem that all my “watched” data will be lost, and all the meta data would have to be rebuilt as well, so that is not something that I want to do!
I’ve seen this article “Move an Install to Another System | Plex Support” but it mentions that if you are going from one system type to another it might not suitable.
Going from Synology to Nvidia I’m going from Linux to Android… will the article still apply?
Has someone already done this and can give me any guidance / pointers / hints?
I’d give it a shot. While PMS on Shield is “Android,” Android is based on Linux, so there’s a good chance you’ll get it to work.
After you first set up PMS on the shield, and before you try to do the transfer - you’ll want to transfer the database to either an internal user accessible location, or to an attached USB drive. Given the issue with PMS on Android 11 right now (is your Shield upgraded?), you should do this first and make sure you don’t have issues with your PMS before transferring the data.
If it is working, just make sure to stop the PMS on the Shield anytime you are copying files over.
If you do get it transferred and working, there is a utility out there that will let you transfer the watch status of users from one database to another. It’s a command line utility, but I used it with success when I was transferring the watch status for some internal users on the Shield.
I haven’t got HW transcoding to work correctly since v1.23 for high bitrate HEVC. Not sure if that’s just me and 4k content, or if others are also having issues.
