For some reason, when I try to play a file with the subtitles selected, it lags, almost as if buffering, every 5 seconds or so. I am running Plex version 0.9.15.16 and there is a green check mark next to “up to date.” I am streaming from my desktop via ethernet cable to my PS4 console. With subtitles set to “none,” the files play perfectly. Once I select a subtitle (in my case English), the file will not play without the lagging. I have searched the forums and can’t find any information (at least none that I can understand), that addresses this issue. Please help. Thank you.
Very likely, the subtitle needs to be ‘burned in’ by the server into the video picture.
Which is the same as a full transcode.
If your server machine has not a fast cpu, this can lead to stuttering and lag.
You should state your cpu type and the type of TV.

Thanks Otto… It is an older computer and is connected to the PS4 console via ethernet cable. I was afraid it might be my CPU, and it probably is. Just in case, I just set the option “Burn subtitles” to “Always.” Do I need to create an optimized version for this to work, or do I just play as normal?
Where did you set ‘Burn subtitles’? Under Settings - Web? If so, it has nothing to do with playback on the PS4. Revert it.
You can try to make an optimized version. Just make sure to activate the subtitle on the preplay screen of the movie before you do that.
