Trouble playing mkv files

Server Version#: latest version

I have read a few topic threads dealing with problems with buffering when playing mkv files.

I am having those issues right now and the files concerned are not that large … .all 45 minute TV episodes with files sizes ranging from 150 - 800 MB.

In all the topic threads I have read … two things seem to be common … not many people experience this issue … those that do don’t seem to find a solution.

So … my question is … is there a real problem playing mkv files with Plex Media Server … and if there is not why do some folks like me have this issue?

I am running Plex Media Server on 5 day old windows 10 machine … .but it still has the same mkv buffering issue as my previous Windows 10 machine.

Any advice, thoughts or technical input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much … .Phil

mkv is just a container. If you are having buffering issues, most likely the cause are the actual video and audio codecs inside the mkv file.

Thank you. I have read this … and this … and this overview

I am not a coder or a software engineer … but my take away after reading is the creation of an mkv file involves some option choices on the part of the creator. These choices will either align with the algorithms in Plex Media Player or not which then leads to a problem with buffering as my computer now has to do the decoding for the server.

Questions:

1 - am I close to being right?

2 - what ‘MediaInfo’ technical and tag information about a video or audio file should I be looking for that best aligns with what Plex Media Server is expecting?

3 - if I sent one of the files to you (that is giving me problems) would that help in any way … meaning I could send all the log reports etc. to you but if you can play the file and I can’t plus my info that might be more instructive.

Basically I would like to know exactly why the file won’t play … is it my issue or a server issue …and therefore what I as a user … or you as a service provider … can do about it…

Many thanks in advance for taking time to read and respond. Phil

PS - I apologize if I didn’t get the hyperlinking correct.

Plex will give you the important bits of information.
Just call up the Plex media info
Even better, copy the content of the XML code into here, after clicking on the orange “View XML” link.

Equally important is the information about which particular type of Plex client you are using.
As well as whether you are trying to play it from a different network (i.e. “remotely”) or from inside the same network as the plex server.

Tip: a tool like this one belongs into the arsenal of every one with a digital media collection: https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

Thank you.

This is great information and I have to apologize for maybe not understanding completely here.

Just a quick note that I am using Plex via a Roku 3 …it is 7 years old now. The Roku and the computers/drives are on the same network … wired not wireless. I am using PlexMediaServer-1.20.0.3181-0800642ec-x86

I think what you are saying is gather the info from these sources and share it with you so you can look under the hood to see what is going on … do I understand you correctly?

Again … many thanks Phil

Precisely.
